Well, my new rig worked great for a month. Then the time came to register Windows XP. So, I formatted my OS drive and reinstalled to get another free month. I go back to install the drivers for my Delta 410 card, and they don't work. Windows tells me that they were installed properly, but it goes on to tell me that the hardware can't start. I did the whole "add new hardware" song and dance, because M-Audio failed to incorporate an executable in their driver disc. So here I am without a working computer, and I'm in the middle of producing a local band. Suggestions, anyone?

What...

were...

...

I can't even bear to ask...

I thought you could legally use it on 2 PC's in your home without a repurchase.

If you're in the process of "producing a local band", maybe you can spring for a legitimate copy of WinXP for $90 instead of trying to get by illegally.

I don't know, just a thought.

Yeah, Windows sucks.

Don't you hate it when they build this stuff into software that stops you from stealing it. I mean, what could they possibly be thinking.

Whoa, hey man, don't be so quick to judge. Microsoft has done much to undermine the quality of the internet and computer use in general. I don't mind screwing them over $90, they've done enough damage to PC users. I only use it because I NEED to.

Oh, and that link gives no information as to how you make a copy. It says that you could legally make a copy, but you can't because of copy protection. That's almost as funny as MS desparately trying to figure out ways that MS Office is superior to OpenOffice.org.

So...if you hate Microsoft so much, why not switch to Linux?

Dude, I would, except I'd rather be running an app in its native environment. I've heard n-Track doesn't behave very well in WINE.

...

lame...

just buy another copy man

As ol’billy gates once said, he knows that people are ripping software developers off, but at some point in your life you are going to buy that same software you download or copy. Don’t believe me?
Here is an example: (lets say your 20 years old now) when your 80 years old, you aren’t going to know shit about computers, because they will progress so fast that you wont have time to keep up (meaning your current mind state is suffering from Alzheimer’s), and you wont have any clue how the hell you copy or burn cd's anymore because there will be some new whatchamacallit, that you wont have a clue how to work. Finally, you throw in the towel and just buy windows 2064 (because your tired of formating every month with that "copied" version of the ancient windows XP). So, ol’billy boy still got your money, and is laughing in the grave.

What kind of justification is that ? I'm a Linux admin and I hate the limitations of Windows, but that doesnt mean it's o.k. to steal it.

So because you disapprove of their business practices, but have to use their product, you feel justified to not pay them for their software?

If you carried that philosophy over to any other commercial field, you'd be stealing.

Hey, you've got some nice gear there. What's your address so I can come over and help myself to it? Don't be so quick to judge, I just need better than I have right now.

GMAFB...

Yeah but then he can't download the other stuff from Kazaa!!!

You do have a legal copy of n-Tracks....right?

YES, I have a legal copy of n-Track. I believe in supporting great software and great software developers. Microsoft does not fit that criteria, so I will not support them. Anyway, I'll probably be switching to Linux for audio now, thanks to that great article Drummer4life posted.

Let me see if I got this right?

Don't like the product beacuse they make money off changes, upgrades, updates, etc..., so you bad mouth it.

Sounds like a Newer version of a Corvette.

Ever thought about switching over to analog?

No. Not what I said. I don't like Windows because it is an insidious, inefficient parasite not worth using unless you are a budget audio guy or someone who doesn't understand how to use computers. If you can't handle the fact that I will not pay for a MS product, fine. Just stop preaching. Preaching sounds bad, and it sounds worse when you try to mix it with sarcasm.
