This may work fine as long as you don't have a habit of biting your finger nails! (If you have any)
Seriously overtime with a bit of rest and continued playing you will develop a flat callous like hardness on your fingertips. I find it does not take long if you don't play regulary for your fingers to soften up, but a few sessions on the old 12 string will get the hardness back in no time!
When I used to play a lot a few years ago my fingers used to turn hard and green because of the strings. They were really calloused and a greeny blue colour all the time.
I started learning the guitar fairly recently, and the last blister I had didn't heal until a week after. Progress on the guitar, as perhaps expected, is slow!
