Will a Joe meek pre cut down noise from a marshall mic?

I just bought a marshall mxl 2001p and a joe meek pre. by using the pre will it decrease the noise? Or make the signal to noise raicio higher. I knew this model is more prone to noise than others. but for $99.00 It was a steal. Please send me some feedback.

Which Joemeek did you get? As my mics are in stiff competition with Marshall, and I am releasing my own $99.00 Studio Projects mic in January, I will not comment on the one you bought, but I can help you if I know what Joemeek mic pre you got.

A pre shouldn't decrese the noise nor should it add noise. Its simply their to amplify the source.

A noise gate is about the only thing that will remove noise and that only works by muteing the output while there is no sound above the thresh hold.
 
...but since the pre amplifies the whole signal from the mic, then it will bring up the mic's self noise as well. All preamps also have a varying degree of self noise.

The only way around this is to get a quiet mic and a quiet preamp. Or, like Garak says, to gate out any noise inbetween singing phrases.
 
There is a saying i was once told by an old studio Guru of mine.

"You can't polish shit."

If your microphone is really poor, there isn't really much you can do to get rid of the noise.

Admittedly, a noise gate would cut the audio whilst there was noone singing, but the noise would kick in along with everything else once the input volume exceeded the input levels.

Just an opinion.

VC3Q Pro Channel

the pre is a joe meek vc3q pro channel. where can I find studio projects mics? I've heard of the c1. couldn't find it at sam ash. thanx for the replies

I'm not gonna really answer your question, but I will tell you about my super new better than others made in china $99 dollar mic. It's made in the same factory of all the other $99 dollar mics, but it's better becasue it has my name on it. Token sentence: tell me which pre you have and I'll pretend to help you.

What kind of music are you recording? If it's anything that involves a full band behind the singer, the self-noise of the 2001 will not be an issue at all. Auditory masking will take care of that. Fo all intents and purposes, the self-noise on the 2001 should be insignificant. If you can hear a significant amount of hiss when a singer is singing, send it back. There's something wrong with it and from what I hear Marshall will replace it.

If on the other hand you're intending to record only quiet sources such as celtic harp, then the 2001 into a joe meek pre isn't the signal chain you should be using anyway.

We have lots of dealers, so getting one is not a problem. The VC3Q is a quiet mic preamplifier. Sure, its not a Manley or Avalon, but then again it does not cost 4K.

There should be no reason the VC3Q is adding noise. My guess is your gains could be set improperly, but the C1 is significantly better than the 2001 you're using...no disrespect to Marshall.

A gate can help, but then you might hear it working, so consider that as well. You can find dealers on our site at www.studioprojectsusa.com

I'm going to be playing behind a band. For $99.00 I should at least give it a try. If I'm not happy I can send it back to samash. They have a great return policy.

If that's not spam, I'm not sure what is. Before "designing" or whatever mics, did you used to be a car salesman? Do a search of all Tom Cram's posts will ya? He answered questions about dbx products but never dissed others PERIOD! That's just bad form. Aren't marshall and your mic made in the same factory? That would be rather funny if they are!

well he does distribute/work with Joe Meek products. Maybe he was thinking that there was a quality concern with that part of the signal chain...


Kelly is right though, depending on the noise behind you, it may get masked. Are you recording vocals in a room by themselves? IS the mic picking up hum/noise in the room that your ears are tuning out? Are you lucky enough to be in a band that uses distorted/effected vocals alot?

I'm may be a bit deaf from that loud rock-n-roll but everything in my house hums a little bit and I am sure the mics pick it up....

yes I record vocals in a room by themselves.
I'm using a little distortion on my vocals. Maybe some delay. and a some reverb. Not whole lot of distortion. but the acompaniment is distorted. could that be enough to cancel out the noise? Also I want to give as dynamic a performance as possible. Wil the noise of the mic be more aparent in the softer sections of the music.

Maybe I was a car salesman, but does that matter? You're an asshole, but who the hell cares!

The Marshall 2001 mic is made by Fielo in South China. Fielo is the owner of the SE brand of microphones. Show me where I dissed Marshall in that last post, I said the C1 is a better mic than the 2001...So!

Marshall makes some very good mics, but I did not say they were crap. I said the C1 is better than the 2001. If you want to compare the V67 to the C1 fine, but the 2001 is $99.00 and can be compared with my B1, or other lower cost mics.

Why don't you get over it already. Don't you have anything better to do than watch for my posts so you can get your kicks and say...wow spam man.

Ive seen Wally posting here awhile and I can call him alot ot things but asshole isnt one of them....ive seen many helpful posts on a varietyof subjects from him....i cant recall you posting on much else besides the products you sell...call it what you want, thats borderline SPAM...

Believe what you will, its you're right. I am way to busy to screw with this guy anyway. I have prooved everything I said was true, and have answered everything to everyone truthfully.

So I said the C1 is better than the 2001, so is the AT4033. There I have said something nice about another manufacturer. :D

the spamming doesn't bother me, since we all know you're just promoting your mics, as well as the Joemeek stuff.

But seriously, calling anyone an asshole simply doesn't have it's place here. I've seen you getting into arguments in other threads here. No offense, but maybe you're a bit of a hothead. Just try to calm down, man.
