Totally wrong. Bands don't struggle with gigs because of the economy. People don't stay home because of beer prices. That's ridiculous. If anything, the club/bar circuit is booming. Bands have trouble with gigs because there are too many bands. Gone are the days of bars and clubs begging for bands to play. Now bands beg to let them play. Some of them even pay money to the club for a gig. That's absurd to me. Maybe your locale has fallen apart and you can't see past your own front door. Understandable. Probably likely given your ass-backwards views on everything else in this thread. But In my area, hell whole state, there are shitloads of bars and clubs, and even more people trying to play there. Must be home recording's fault.

It's respected if you have nothing else to worry about. Its also selfish, if everybody did this who would pump the gas? Who would take our orders> Who would put out our fires? who would fix pot holes? And If you abadon your wife and kids to pursue it you are selfish scum.
For every delusionist who got lucky, thousands failed, then they end up collecting food stamps and struggling every day after they fail.
Music shouldnt be so all or nothing. It be great if a good hard working musician could make 50 to 100 k a year and not have to worry, but it's not like that. You either struggle or make it big.

Ive played in more than a couple dozen bands, I know more "working" musicans than you can even name, dont tell me how it is out there ok? You talk out of your ass, you try to sell shit music for a charity, you aint going to tell me how the live music business works.

My mum once told me "never feed the trolls" so I didn't, until now, mainly because after watching this blow by blow i found myself getting furious. Anyway, i won't say more than this;
The Feeling - recorded whole first album with at least two UK hit singles in their house!. Even their second album (which this article is about) was DIY'd in just in a bigger house with better gear
David Gray - Biography on Bio. - recorded "White Ladder" with some international number 1's in his flat on a four track!
The Creek Drank the Cradle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - one of the finest songwriters of the modern age imo recorded this first album in his garage!
Gotye - Making Making Mirrors - a short documentary - YouTube - recorded a international number 1 in his garage!
And the last foo fighters album, albeit it with a bit of help and a lot of money, was technically HR'd
Also, i'm very lucky to say that Les Reed is my grandma's neighbour and, as such, in my second year of uni i was lucky enough to interview him for a project. One of my questions was about the use of sampled instruments and i was surprised when he said that, not only did he use them, but he had a home studio which he used to both capture ideas and for sound design for film and tv. I think this approach of being a songwriter/musician and just wanting a home studio to capture ideas is still where a lot of people start. some may never go any further than that because, perhaps, they just don't want to and just see their home studio as a tool, but others find themselves drawn to the wonders of recording technology.
Fuck it, i can't be arsed to say more or get philosophical. And as it's already been said, what kind of person starts a profile called "hates recording" and then comes onto a home recording forum just to start arguments

Wow - long thread. Badly written songs have always existed, now they are easier to distribute. It's easier to buy equipment than to practice. Good equipment can be inspiring. There's a lot of great songs written by the members of this board.

lol, i actually forgot how good it was. Tbh, i just dug out the link from an email i sent to a friend a while back and posted without watching it. I have now watched it again and, to me, it's very inspirational. it may not be everyones cup of tea and is certainly a different way of writing songs but i just love how passionate he is about every thing he's doing. i don't think i'd have the patience to sample an autoharp one note at a time

Gosh, why is everyone so angry? I built my recording studio in my basement so I'd have a place to practice with my band and to record our own music. I actually got the album our band produced picked up and released by Hula Records a local old-time recording label. We used an outside mastering studio to polish my mixes. It didn't sell much but I got noticed and a number of my songs have been covered by local bands including one that The Kingston Trio recorded and just released this year. But I never looked at music as a job, but as a love. My career job paid the bills and music kept me sane...at least partially. Once I felt I was too old to R&R I started using my studio as an inexpensive facility for emerging artists to get their music memorialized. One album we did was nominated for a Hoku award, Hawaii's equivalent of the Grammys. Some others are regular sellers on the Internet. But then the stuff that I get to work on isn't Katy Perry, etc. It 's all sorts of interesting indie bands, ethnic music, singer/songwriters, etc. We all have dreams and for most of us, as long as we keep our expectations real, we end up being happy with whatever we've accomplished. I have great respect for the commercial studios and figure if I can be someone's leg up towards their goals and dreams, then I'm happy. Again, one just has to keep their expectations realistic.
