I don't think anyone would disagree that people should try to write good songs. But again, what makes a good song? And what's wrong with trying to make good recordings once you think you got one written? You link the two together like one affects the other, but it doesn't. Or shouldn't. Maybe it does for some people. They're fucked.

Music is indeed a form of communication.
So is writing.
Many people write diaries with no intention of their being made public.
Many people write poems that remain hidden in a bottom drawer.
The presence of an audience is not a necessary condition for a pursuit to be enjoyable or not boring.
In that sense, music is not "a bit different than other hobbies".

I have all the gear I need...it cost less than a five year old car...Im not sure if that qualifies as expensive...my last hobby was motorbikes, they cost quite a bit more than a five year old car

Because writing a good song could take a lifetime, and may never happen. And My point was technology is making people bypass this idea, I had a guy on a forum that "all the experts" he has spoken to, tell him as long as it sounds master quality, they can get their music in movies and tv, even if the song is not good.
Maybe, but then you are not doing it for love, you are doing it to get paid. And if the idea is to just make money with anyting sell cookies instead of songs.
I just fear it's going to spawn a generation of young musicians who grew up on guitar hero thinnking they are making good music, and this form of music will be considered good.
Nothing is as good as it used to be, and Im not that old to be saying that, i go back and study music of the 50's 60s and early 70's as much as i do listening to new music.

These are important points. And I agree entirely. It is not just the accessibility of technology. It is also the culture of entitlement. There are many who think that because they can do something they are then entitled to the rewards of that something. So there are many wannabe popstars who think that they should and will achieve success because they have a Macbook Pro and a USB mike.
But it is a mistake to make a generalisation of the specific. There is a proportion of the home recording population that think this way. But not all do. And lumping those that don't think that way into the group that do is doing the first a great disservice.

Well I don't disagree with any of that, I just don't see why it bothers you so much. You're kind of romanticizing the idea of songwriting. Is there a fucking shitload of shit out there? For sure. It shouldn't bother you though unless you have aspirations to beat them out and gain success yourself, in which case, you're exactly what you rant against.

People write diaries with NO intention of people seeing it. Thats a diary for their personal selves.
if songwriting was for your personal self, you wouldn't record it.
people who write poems and stick them in their drawer dont really think they are poets.
Recording your song, is a way of showing it to others, and being on this forum shows that is what you are doing.
If your writing for yourself you dont need to record it or share it with others online.

According to this guy no one should record, spend any money on equipment, or let anyone listen to anything they've ever done. We should all just sit in the dark with an acoustic guitar and make up songs on the spot and never do anything with it. Did I miss anything?

I've worked with dudes who dressed in rags and spent over $2000 a year on gas station food, drive thru coffees, and cable. A few grand is not unreasonable to spend on something that offers a lifetime of enjoyment.
