Why should I use Cubase SX and not Sonar?

OK,well I rebooted and played the file I recorded in midi and it fired up all my instruments and this time I could hear them. This time however, it came up with a "pending connection" dialogue, and I had to specify the "directssound/midix3" connection.

So my stuff works when we're talking about midi in/out sequencing. But I see by your first post you are just trying to play a midi file. I don't have any luck playing one either. I've gotta go to work right now, but I'll let you know in 8 or 9 hours what I can figure out.

Thanks,
It's around bed time here. And I have a social event tomorrow night, so I might not return before Thursday.

Hey man don't give up so easily, can you get a vsti to play with your controller, or is it just a case of not hearing any audio output for the midi file?
I know you have to enable RECORD on any midi track in order for it to play [midi thru]
then on the midi tracks input select your midi port in, for example on mine its -usb in A [keyboard controller] , then likewise, you must select the midi tracks output.
The metronome is not really midi, so you hearing it doesn't mean automatically that you should hear a midi file, I think basically you have to tell the midi track what to use for its voice, when you create a midi track in sx you can get to all the in/out options I believe by clicking the little edit button on the track, so say you drop in any ole midi file, i.e mary had a little lamb, or whatever, then you have to specify in the midi tracs output what to use for the voice,i.e your sound cards general midi, an external module/device, a vsti, etc.
Nuendo/SX rock man don't give up just yet.
and for that price.......

Tried all your advice. Didn't work. Don't understand why I should record enable, when I don't want to record anyway. But I tried it.

One discovery in "transport" it says offline. Could this be wrong. Sound like it ought to be online to me. Where do I change this property?

Sorry, I haven't got back to figure it out just yet. I'll try in a while again.
then you have to specify in the midi tracs output what to use for the voice
I think that is the deal too. Just have'nt figured out how to do it yet. I'll be back.

Shreadzilla, do you have sx? Can you simply play a midi file and get audio?

try this one

O.K I got offline & messed about abit, the record enable was a mistake on my part, you only need to do THAT if you are triggering a vsti or other external gear via an external controller,
record enable activates MIDI THRU .
Every thing else is dead on accurate, i.e yes Subtractor, I can just drop [import] any midi file, & set it up as described and it WILL work, but not until you specify the output source for the midi track, the easiest way is to: open a new project, empty, create one midi track [just to simplify this for now] ,then hit f3 to bring up the vst mixer, at this point it may be helpful to click the little arrow at the top of the midi track & select WIDE [makes it easier to see text labels, etc.] Depending on what you have chosen in the device setup/midi, you will see your midi in label at the top of the track, anyway forget about the midi in for now, you just want to play an imported file..so look at the bottom of the midi track & you will see 2 things, the track name, i.e midi 1, and below that you will see the output selection, click on this and you should see [based on your sound card/selected vsti's/attached hardware midi in& out, eg. my midisport 2 by 2] all of your OUTPUT options.
I can either select my T.BEACH general midi, OR A VSTI usually the latter.
thats it, tombuur, are you doing this?, and also have you gone in & setup all of your audio/midi devices, etc.?
Just thought of one thing tombuur, do as I 've instructed, but after setting up the midi track & importing the file to it, hit F11 [vsti rack] and select one of SX'S included vsti's, it should now appear in the output selection list at the bottom of the midi track, see if you can get any sound out of one of those.
Subtractor, I 'll give your midi file a shot , be back later.
tombuur don't give up man we can help you figure out the problem.

Subtractor, cool midi man is that you? it kinda sound like that one song......
I'm a fire starter, something firestarter..., who was that?
anyway it was cool.
lemme know if you guys make any headway on the problem,
also I was gonna ask tombuur to list in detail his setup, it may illuminate the situation more,
peace,
Shreadzilla

OK I figured it out. You just have to specify where it says "no drum map, choose "GM Map", and on your midi out choices pick microsoft GS wavetable, or the appropriate internal "midi voice" setting for your system. You'll have to specify for each track unless there is someway of changing the defaults.:D

Figured it out for that midi file that is... Which is pretty much a short version of what you said shred.;) So there you have it Tom!

OK, so just change the drum map if it's a drum track. Correct?

Well, I like it even better now. Thanks for making me take the time to learn something! I've got several synths and modules and cubase has most of them built in so it's a cinch to route a track to any of my instruments and even change programs etc.
Forgive me for sounding so newbian... I've not done much midi recording. Pretty cool!:D

Tried your sugggestions. Actualle did that before I even posted anything here.

As "out" I select SB Audigy Synth A, or even MS wavetable or one of Audigy's ports for external connection. In the Key Editor I can hear the notes when inserting or moving them, no matter what I choose. Internal works, external keyboard works. I can even change the sound of the instrument. But ... as soon as I press the play button in the Transport Window, there is no sound.

I guess you are using the real program. Could this be an error in the demo? Perhaps they disabled something by mistake?

Finally, why is Cubase SX better than Sonar?

Yes, I would like the VST thing, perhaps ASIO is better than what Sonar has, but are there other things of importance? The Sonar interface is not as beautiful colorwise, but you have direct buttons for all different editors etc. In Cubase you have to go look for the same editors in obscure places. And the current problem has not convinced me that Cubase is more reliable, I'd say to the contrary ...

It might be the demo, but I doubt it. It works for me.

To edit anything, just double click on the track.

Honestly tomburr, I couldn't tell you if Sonar is better or not because I've never used it.
But I figured it would be worth your while to get the midi problem sorted as SX is very powerful.
I do know that Sonar can use most if not all of the vsti istruments via some kind of wrapper, also there are many DX instruments that work just fine.
Your midi problem has me stumped, usually its one of the basic things that we've already gone over, I 'm not sure what the limitations of the demo are? maybe a time limited functionality?
or it could be that some features are disabled ?
At this point I have no answers for you, if you want you could go to:http://linux1723.dn.net/cgi-bin/ubb...+for+windows&number=2&DaysPrune=10&LastLogin=
& see if anyone there can help,
best wishes

Small progress. Going into vst instruments and installing one of the bass synths, I have made it play a midi track with this. But still not with the Audigy card.

HOORAY!

Now all you need is a real audiocard!

Congrat's!

See, SX is pretty cool once you just figure out a few things.
