why aren't the majority of people on these boards successful?

t's a bit like going on to an Amateur dramatics message board and asking "why haven't any of you won an oscar?"

I vaguely recall viewing this grotty wanker on a television show when I was a child. He was negative, rude, and believe it or not... lived in a garbage can. Definately not a definition of success.....unless your talking stage managers that is

I throw a couple bucks at that - I LOVE bagpipes.

I like bags.. and I like pipes (often Bongs.. not to be confused with that big circular chinese thing those guys hit with the mallet) but to find both for two dollars? A bag of Oregeno is the best you can get. Maybe leaves and stems.

I've known a few people who got "close" - hell back in the mid 70's I was rubbing elbows (actually passings joints) with some very name acts from the Northern California music scene (Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, the "Dead"), but close don't mean "success".

You got stoned with the greats thus ye art thou Successful.

On the musician side of things, it WOULD be interesting to see if there were people (or anyone for that matter) that actually did "make it big" that wanted to.

They make some kind of pump in Sweden that can help with that. Don't believe that spam that shows up in the email. That cream don't work worth a crap.

lot of the music industry is similar to the film industry where it's not just how good you sound, as who you know..

No no no... It's not who you know but who you BLOW. Pucker up .. buttercup and I'll make you FAMOUS. One salty swallow for millions and years of future success. Do the math.

hell even then you'll get some shitty contract where you're lucky to

Every dark cloud has a silver lining. What people don't know is that they need to EMBRACE those shitty contracts... learn to TAKE IT up the ass-gina.. and then.. and only then will they make "The Big Time". Think positive... a shitty contract is a GOOD THING. The "I don't like this shitty contract" attitude is for the bar bands and those idiots who play the state fairs. You've seen em.. you know who they are. Remember that guy you saw playing bongo's on the street for spare change? That guy is the guy who didn't sign that "Shitty Contract", and now see where he is? Some of you might say, "Oh yeah.. but he's successful because he is happy!" Bullshit man.. that guy isn't happy.. he's smiling because he's half retarded and drunk on cheap wine he found in the dumpster behind the Circle-K. Did I mention that he DIDN'T sign the shitty contract?

Anyone know of any Top 40 (or 100) Artists that may have popped on this board at some point? I know I've heard enough quality music in the mp3 section that it seems inevitable.

Why would someone of that stature and the means surf a Home Recording messageboard? Are you nuts? The reason that many of the Mp3's here are "quality music" is because the people who post them simply "Rock". Lots of people here rock... and it's best to keep it our little slice of heaven. Keep in mind what happened to MTV and you'll see where I'm coming from.

so we have a few who are successful on the recording side of things - and many people actually know what they're talking about... but this forum is for songwriters and performers as well. why haven't we been wildly successful as performers or songwriters or recording engineers/producers.

Frank Zappa once said something along the lines of that an Artist is simply a "CLOWN" to the record company. He might have said A&R rep.. or Record Label. All I remember is that to them.."The Man"... an artist is a clown. I find this personally offensive, for I feel that I myself, should be regarded by the music industry as say.. President of the United States. Album sales slowing? Declining attendance at shows? Trends changing? Too bad! Watch my pass this bill and get myself... my "party" this freaking 50 billion bucks.

it's a slightly different in that we have the ability to record ourselves at a quality where most people will accept. the actors cannot do that successfully and must rely on many others. on this board I see some of the most talented individuals.

I've known plenty of people who have made semi-professional independant movies in the same way that we do recordings. There are many websites for independants out there but I'm a little too drunk to try and find one right now. The last time I had a few too many I surfed off the beaten path and next thing I knew my Internet Explorer had a billion popups and my computer was loaded with Spyware. One thing to keep in mind.. like musicians.. actors now have easier means to produce a professional quality product. Just ask Ron Jeremy.

Many people on this board were never looking to become famous and sell millions of CDs (I think we've kind of covered the engineer side, and some of them actually do have very successful careers, and I'm just glad they're here to help my sorry ass out).

No complaints here either. This BBS is invaluable.. and it's because of the experienced people who take the time to help out. Now if only we can get them to (ahem) reveal some of those "secrets" on mixing/mastering that they tip-toe around and not tell us! ;)

I'm a high school teacher by trade. Home recording is my hobbie. I respect all those pro recordists out there. I envy them in a way, but I love my job as a educator. Rock is my "release."

School of Rock was awesome!

i feel successful when i walk down the street and someone says "hey didn't i see you on tv?" or when my old singer calls me up wanting to hang out so he can ask me if i want to start a band with him again. i may not have 3 million in the bank and be on a world tour, but i do have enough usefullness that people want to keep asking me to work with them.

Quite frankly, without the 3 million and world tour, you're pretty much in the same boat as the guy who works at Burger King.. making flame broiled whoppers. He wears a paper hat. Would you like an apple pie wid dat?

See for yourself..

Excuse me? Isn't that a little patronizing? I put myself and my 3 kids through college, had a successful career, and now have the free time to record myself and my cohorts...a CD I recorded, and played on, and did the graphics on will soon be released, and I'm working on another one. I have spent a lifetime with music and art and don't think I need to defend whether or not I'm "successful". Hell yes, I'm successful at enriching my life and involving myself with gifted, creative people, and if you judge my success by whether YOU have heard of me or not you probably need therapy.

All these years and it still stings that you got dumped by the label. Well, there is professional therapy for that too you know. Until now it has only been available to those "Beverly Hills" types but now because of competition of "Home Therapy" they now have it available to everyone for free!

Click here if you've recently been dumped by your label.

I'm not successful because I have an inferiority complex. I mean, yes. I'm the sole provider for my family. I have a wonderful house in a class A school district. My son attends the best pre-school in the area and my wife has the luxury to not work and attend college to finish up her degree and begin on her masters. And sure, we both drive nice cars that are bought and new. And fine, you could point out the memberships to the yacht club, the gym, and the various musical associations. And that i've got a beautiful collection of instruments and equipment to satisfy my hobby of recording. It's also pointed out to me that my new CD release has sold well and I have had to have 3 batch presses of it by request from my .com seller. All of which my income subsidizes. Man, I wish I was successful... Well, that was fun. Anybody want to talk about me some more?

That's all a big fat lie. You work at Burger King. The beauty of the Internet is that anyone can make themselves to be famous whether it be lines of text, a professional website full of fake BS, etc. Would you like an apple pie wid dat?

Because I am a "has-been," I'm in the same category of credibility as any Internet "never-was." I'm just someone on the net. Everyone on the net is just as negligible as anyone else. Nobody has to listen to me, because if I were worth listening to I'd be doing something important instead of screwing around on the net with a bunch of contentious ignoramuses. Right?

Finally.. a post from someone who "get's it"..a true Sludgeaholic. THIS is what you should make a sticky.. as they call it in the forum.

he typical musician knows less about "making it" in the recording business than a cat knows about Christmas.

Your first post went so well and then the following grounded itself with this line. The cat DOES know something about Christmas. Rent National Lampoons "Christmas Vacation" for the upcoming Holiday season and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Odd, I don't see musical talent on this list. hhhhmmmmm. I know that must mean something, but I just can't put my finger on it.

Talented Marketing.

And where is that? There are many forms of success. For some people just getting through the day without going to jail is a success.

I find that getting through the day without crapping my pants is success.. but does it make me a "Rock Star"?

And then there's Donald Trump.

Yeah.. and then there's Donald Trump. He might be a financial success but look at that friggin hair. All that money and none of it will help his hair. He could shave his head but nope.. he keeps the hair. Just look at that hair. Donald Trump.

I don't know why - my mom says my recording skills are great, but nobody wants to pay me for them

When I was a kid my mom told me that when I grew up I could be anything I wanted to be. Needless to say, I've grown up to be more negative than I thought I'd ever be.

Just America? Or do hits in other countries count?

Hahahahahaha...I was trying to think of the same thing to say...

If anyone here on Homerecording.com owns a recorder and records at home, then apparently they are successful.
