I've ordered from American Musical, MF, Music 123, Zzounds, and 8th Street. The one I use the most is American Musical. They've been very good to me. Never had a problem with any returns, they always price match and will get back to me quickly, and if you order by 4pm the order typically goes out same day. Plus, they have payment plans (using your own credit card) should you choose to want you purchase split up over 3 or 5 payments. Hard to beat. Another reason is they are only one state away(they are in NJ), so no tax AND if they ship by 4pm I'll have my items the next day, usually morning, with their free shipping! Oh, and they offer UPS shipping. The downside is they don't have a lot of the better gear, but for general purchases it's my first place to look.
One thing I personally avoid is places that only ship Fed Ex. I do not like Fed Ex. In my area it's absolutely horrible. If AMS ships UPS, I have it next day. If they mistakenly ship Fed Ex (which is their default), it typically takes 5 days. Yes... 5 days. I don't know about where you live, but here I avoid Fed Ex like the plague, and will not buy from a place that only ships Fed Ex unless the price is practically free and I don't need the product for a week or two. All that for Fed Ex ground, 2nd day Fed Ex isn't too bad, but places typically charge premiums for that.

Markertek ... funny. That company is right up the road from me (well, about 15 miles). I've been in and out of that place - years ago and before they moved into their new place of business. I remember when it was pretty much a two man show. Nice to see them doing well.

Thanks for the heads up. I only ever thought of markertek for cables and connectors etc. BH looks good, but Mercenary will have to wait til I'm ready to turn pro.

You can talk Guitar Center down to 260.00 on the BX-5's. I know cause I just did it 2 weeks ago!

You get actual CUSTOMER SERVICE with Sweetwater, even after the sale. Those guys go out of their way. They assign you a sales rep who follows up on your purchases. Pretty impressive.

I've ordered from Zzounds, 8th Street, Music123, American Musical, BPMMusic, and Musician's Friend. I've never had a problem with any of them. I've always gotten my orders relatively quickly without a hassle or problem. You can't really nickel and dime them to death, but usually one will have THE best price. Gotta look at them all to find the one, though.

Don't be afraid of open box or scratch/dent items. I've ordered a few of those and had good luck. Nice way to save a few bucks.

Also - I've bought several lightly used things from people on BBSs.

I really try hard not to order from Musician's Friend. They're the online version of Guitar Center, and I absolutely refuse to give them any more of my hard-earned dough. I've had one too many bad experiences with GC to ever, ever spend money in that place, I don't care how good the price is.

My favorite music store, if you live in the northeast, is Daddy's Junky Music. Best pricing on used gear, period. One example: I got an AT4033 mic for $150. But they don't do online sales.

Lots of good online places - just, you know, stay away from MF, IMO. :)

I start out with MF, then check out american musical supply, who are always a couple of pennies cheaper. Then on down to 8th street, usually quite a bit cheaper. I usually end up at full compass though, they are almost always cheapest, and thier customer service is decent.

There are a couple of other variables in this path sometimes, other places that google out, sometimes one of the above will not carry a certain brand/item...

Just piping up as another satisfied BX5 user. They are excptionally good for their price, and in my case they were absolutely perfect since desk space was at a premium. Just the BX5's alone produce a very decent, if not stellar, bass response, and the EQ controls make them fit pretty much any environment you have.

Hey Richie

What's wrong with Sile's post? At the begining of the thread part of the discussion was about the item to be purchased (M-Audio Studiophile BX5) as well as where to buy.

There must be more to it.

Sile...Thanks for your vote, I've had 'em almost a week, they're more than I had hoped for. But for less than $300 I didn't hope for much. Definately good bang for the buck.

I use Sweetwater alot since they're local. They are serious about customer service; I get calls from my customer service rep when they get in stuff I might be interested in.
