Who plays with their knobs?

I just use one channel on my amp that really crancks with the guitar volume wide open. Keep it in the middle for all of my rythm parts, higher or lower depending on the amount of overdrive I want to get. No distortion pedals, no other crap, maybe a wah pedal, just straight in. The best clean tone is when a tube amp is cranked and you bareley crack the volume on the guitar. Also I find it necissary to have the extra headroom on my volume for leads. This makes everything less muddy in the mix, especially with multiple guitaists. Guitar players should adjust their volume to fit their role in the band at that time, whether they are soloing or whatever. Also your sound guy will love you.
 
I'm playin with mine right now :p ...I never touch the tone knob, but I do pretty regularly diddle the volume. Turning the volume down to clean up the over drive to play a more classic to clean sound then all the way up to crunch and sizzle! There's a balancing act with the amp settings because if there's too much gain all the way in too early then when you turn the guitar volume down to get a lighter less in your face classy sound then the amp is way too quiet.

You've really got to learn to play with knobs and the only way to get it right is to play with them some more :D
 
I'll back off the volume or visa vera but not a great deal of time. The pickup selector is a different story. I love the different sounds I get from switching p/u's on my strat. So myhatbroke, I'm actually impressed that you even know what those knobs do (or do you?). Nice title for the thread. Sounds like a cave thread to me.

i thought that the lowering the tone knob turned down the tone?

like, 10=best 1=worst ?

i never fully understood why anyone would turn it down, until i realised if i turn it down i can get a more lo-fi sound for some songs. it gets old if you use it too much though. just have it set to "best" mainly.

cool cool. I was under the impression that super-strats were always more trebly sounding...well maybe not more trebly, less bassy. Do you ever roll off the treble?

I use the volume alot. Depending on the guitar, you can get a decent clean sound from lowered volume and neck-pickup. Then switch to bridge and let them hear you raise the volume knob to full dizztortzione!!.. TIMELESS awesomeness.
Never to date have I played a guitar where the tone-knob would be more than useless, though. They only make you sound like playing under a pillow. Nice effect if you want it?..
 
My guitar has only a volume and coil-split switch. A friend of mine suggested that I replace the 500k pot with a 1000k, and rolling off volume actually effects a rolloff of highs as well. Works good when I split the BL L-500 to a single coil config...

...The knob, on the other hand, should never be played with...Way too serious a component to be played with... :p

The tone knob just sucks treble out of your sound. It's kind of subjective as to whether or not this is "better" or "worse". :D
 
guitars:

tone control is vital when using ebow and there's a whole range of tones you get by adjusting the tone control, set it high for a bright buzzy tone or low for a mellow, horn-like tone. also when i want a warmer tone, i'll turn the tone down when playing with fingers or pick.

bass:

my bass has both bass cut and treble cut. i use treble cut some, though usually i prefer the sound of turning down the treble on the amp. the bass cut is very handy when running direct because the low end can be too much without a cut.

Spot on with the e bow, cut the tone to half and you can get piccolo flute sounds. Whack it back up for Cello sound son the low e.

My Wolfies are like that...no tone knob. Just volume and PUP switch.

I always had it on the Bridge PU but now I learned to use the neck PU more too.
 
I constantly play with the knobs also have my front and rear humbuckers coil tapped and on tiny push buttons and can switch phase on all pickups individually or all at once.......lots of wires under the pickguard.
