I've outgrown my Tascam DP01fx unit (8 tracks, I hate bouncing) and traded that in and picked up a Zoom MRS-1608CD unit and after reading the crummy manual I discovered that I DON'T have 16 tracks but just 8 tracks and 4 stereo paired tracks. Well, the only thing i'd ever record in stereo is the drums so that leaves me with 6 wasted tracks i can't use (the manual doesn't go into such things) I've emailed Zoom days ago and haven't heard anything yet so I've packed the unit up and am sending it back to Carvin (where I ordered it from, they only give you 10 days to try it out).

I've been looking at other units on the net and after track #8, all the other indications show tracks 9/10, 11/12, etc...

Who makes a plain old 16 track unit with 16 faders?
I won't get too much into the so called "virtual" track B.S. of the Zoom deck -10 per track! Whoopee! I've got 160+16 tracks to record on and playback! NOT!

Whats your budget? How much are you willing to spend? It starts to get expensive for what you're asking.

Wow. It must still be 1992 where you live. That's the last time 'NOT!' was good for a laugh...

Here's a listing of the 'real' 16 tracks that don't force you to bounce tracks against your better judgement or tax your submix skills.

You'll need to wade thru the ones you've already rejected, but that shouldn't be too hard.

Next time a more pleasant attitude reflected in your forum question will proably net you more answers...

Thanks for the help and my apologies for the upset tone of the topic. I just feel extremely angry that I didn't get what I paid for (again, paired tracks are a stupid waste/concept and the designers should be flogged - but that's just my opinion.. ;>) and that no one else makes a proper multi-track.

And no, not 1992, that wasn't a groovy year!

I looked over zzounds and musiciansfriend last night and (i think) that all those decks (which don't have as many faders as they 'say' they have tracks) have paired tracks. I looked at the Korg 3200 unit ($$$) which said it has 32 dedicated MONO tracks (truth in advertising?).

I wonder how many other people are pissed over this subject and feel ripped off?

Just you, apparently.

With the lack of noise involved in digital track bouncing, you can use one set of your hated 'paired tracks' for a stereo drum sub mix, or two for a 'kick/snare + remaining kit' submix. Priniting effects is another use for paired tracks, as is getting keyboards to sound just as fine as they do when graced by full stereo effects.

Just a guess, but your recording skills probably have some distance to go before you can take full advantage of a DAW and track and mix to the fullest capacity of the machine. These recorders --- even the Tascam that you felt you have 'outgrown' --- are light years ahead of what was available even 10 years ago and any one of them in capable hands could produce CD-quality material...
