I'd love to upgrade the stock tube as a matter of principle, but no markings are visible.

If the answer has already been mentioned elsewhere I apologize.

Anybody know?

Thanks,

*shrugs* I think it's a bog standard Chinese 12AX7 with the manufacturer info scratched off....

I'm still waiting to have time to try mine out since I swapped the tubes. I put an Elektronska Industrija (Yugoslavian) 12AX7 tube in one and a GE 5965 in the other.

At some point, I should probably also try my Sovtek 12AX7LPS, my Tung Sol 12AX7, and/or my Electro-Harmonix 12AU7/ECC82... or maybe one of those Amperex 6072s....

I suspect your best best to avoid oversaturating the stock transformer is probably to use something with lower gain than a 12AX7. Perhaps a 12AT7 or 12AU7. Just a gut feeling, though, until I have a chance to really try them out with other tubes.

...if the mics use a 12AT7 type tube, then the best sound output would probably be achieved using the lower gain 12AY7, the best of which are the GE 6072 (6072A military issue)...the 6072 has been the "heart" of many of the classic tube mics over the years...;)

Antichef,

Are you the one who had your 6802 modded by Marek?

Good, how do I find Marek?

I replaced the stock tube with a Mullard 12AT7, which improved the bass considerably, but left that megaphone-y lower midrange peak untamed.

This mic is definitely a work in progress.

My friend did the same thing with the same results. He then replaced the 12AT7 with a Phillips 5751 and it improved...he got the sound he wanted.

It's Marik. Search by username.

Don't know much about the stock capsule for the 6802T -- Marik replaced mine with a Peluso PK47. He also put in a TAB-Funkenwerk BV314 transformer (I bought the capsule from Peluso on ebay and had it shipped to Marik and I bought the transformer from Oliver and also got him to ship it to Marik) - He massively reworked the circuit.

To start, the only thing that was a given was the capsule - Marik asked me how I wanted the mic to sound and I did my best to describe it, also saying I'd like to keep using 12AT7 tubes if possible (I've got a bunch of them, even though they're really not the best choice for the application) and he picked the transformer and designed the new circuit based on that. It rocks -- like he was reading my mind (except that my mind wasn't totally capable of audioalizing (that's like visualizing, but with sound, get it?) what I got before I heard it.

I was thinking about modding mine like that, but while waiting for it to arrive, I picked up a Pearlman TM-1 which is basically that same capsule. Probably sounds very similar. I'm thinking something with a different vibe.

marik modded my 6802T as well. also with a pk 47 capsule, only mine utilizes a NOS amperex ef86 tube with a TAB-funkenwerk bv308 transformer. he reworked the circuit in mine too, as well as tweaking the psu.

i got a chance to test it on my spoken voice through a friend's acmp84 (since my gear will clearly be the last to ship.) and i thought it sounded great. hard to really tell with no context, but here's the sample nonetheless:

Yup, just tried a Philips 5751, and the midrange honk went away. Amazing.

No, it ain't a Wunder, but it's a LOT better than it was.
