which software to use?

hey,

I'm currently using Cool Edit Pro but I'm finding it a bit of a pain not being able to monitor (listen to) the track I'm recording as I record it. I'm not so keen on getting a mixer as I'm on a budget. Is there any other software program which allows monitoring, possibly one which I could use to record tracks and then import them into Cool Edit, cos I like mixing in CEP, I just can't stand not hearing myself!

This sounds like either a mistake on the user end or a problem with routing through your soundcard. As far as I remember my brief experience with Cool edit pro, you can definitely monitor the track you are recording in real time. This would be a serious drawback to the program if you couldn't.

I agree with Noiseportrait. Check your settings. Either in the windows mixer, or in Cool Edit. I used to have cool edit pro and had no problem playing and listening. In the windows mixer, if you are using that, for recording, you will have to set it to line in, and playback, I think you'll have to have "what you hear", or maybe Line in also checked. Play around a bit if this is the case.

what kind of sound card and computer do you have? crtain sound cards allow you to direct monitor in real time (Tascam us122 for example). Software like Sonar (or possibly Cubase and others, i'm not sure) allow you to imput monitor though the software. You can add effects to your moitoring in real time but they do not get recorded if you do not want them to. Warning though, if your computer is too slow this software method is a BAD idea. When i go the software route, there rae huge latency issues, almost half a second! totally not worth it unless you can get that latency down.

What type of soundcard are use using? A lot of cards now have direct monitoring, especially the break out boxes. I would definitely use that before any software monitoring due to latency issues. I have an M-audio FW410 and it works great in cubase, sonar, and cool edit.
