Which one should I buy?

A product is only as good as the people who support it. Personally I would rather spend a few extra bucks for the Studio Projects or MXL name because at least then you have somebody to go to when they break.

In my day job I work for a software VAR (Value Added Reseller). We don't have anything to do with the actual software production but we do have custom configurations and specialized support and training. Buying the exact same software from another reseller would be a different experience all together.

Even if all Studio Projects or MXL did was put a new sticker on a 797 mic than that would be nothing new in the electronics industry. There are only a handfull of companies manufacturing 90% of all consumer electronics products.

You are paying for somebody to guarantee delivery, listen to your bitching and fix it when it breaks. Maybe they even run their own Quality Assurance to minimize the chances of getting a crappy unit. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I know from personal experience there is a huge difference between the quality of a $300 SE Electronics mic and a $150 MXL or SP mic. The SE loses in every way.

I think you may be selling 797 Audio short... let's face it, if 797 Audio ever cuts SP off... SP will be fucked.

He would just find another manufacturer or change models. Why do you think companies suddenly have different models? Why are their blackfaces and silverfaces and the model with the bigger power supply?

If we only bought stuff with the true manufacturers name there would only be a couple of brands. There are only 3 factories mass producing pianos any more and they are sold under 100s of brands. It's no sin to distribute the same products under different brands and I don't think it's that cut and dry in the case of Studio Projects and MXL. They probably move enough units to have orders built to a certain spec.

Besides, lifes too short to quibble about $200 mics.

Yeah, I guess your right.... SP could just buy their own factory in China like ME MXL did. ;)

Probably in China. If you're going that way, maybe you could pick me up a couple.:)

I have this one. I only paid $425 three years ago from a guy who had imported a few before 797 started selling in the USA themselves.
Where is 797 selling in the USA?
