I'm looking into getting a Neumann mic soon, and I'm wondering which of thier mics is known for being versatile? I'm going to be using this for vocals only and its going to be my only vocal mic, for I'm selling the rest to get this. I'm looking into the TLM 103, but I dunno. Right now, diversity for male and female singing is key. Any suggestions?

*Oh yeah, and right around the $1,000 range preferably. Thanks--

Well, that pretty well narrows it down to a TLM103 then, doesn't it? It's a good mic, quiet and it'll work fine for a lot of male and female vocals. There are cheaper mics that may work better on other male and female vocalsm but they won't say "Neumann" on them.

I love a lot of Neuman mics, but I gotta say that your price is only going to get you a 103, and thats actually a pretty limp mic. Its not a bad mic, but really not a fantastic mic and for less than a grand you can get yourself a really wonderful mic from Audio Technca, shure or microtech-geffel. But if you are sold on the Neuman logo more than the sound then the TLM 103 will do the trick for you.

i dropped some dough on a u87.
i love that fu++in' mic man!
i used to watch all sorts of ass rock vhs movies where my fav band would be in the studio and theyre all using an 87 for vox. I dont give a crap if its not the best, the nostalgia alone was enough for me, but anyways....
trasparent, good multitasker, multi pattern, and hey..it even has the neumann logo.

peace.

try these guys,

http://www.rode.com.au/

1000 bucks would get you a hot mic from them.
Yeah, I've used and owned a Studio Projects C1 and a Rode NT2. I like them both fine. I've just heard such amazing things about Neumann mics that I figured that any Neumann is going to kill. Probably nieve, but that's why I'm posting about it! To find out--

well then go blow your cash and get one man, its worth it..
ive gotten alota clients, (giggle) just because ive got that neumann.
its like i could be an ape (and i very well may be) but as long as ive got that mic. IM THE GUY TA WORK WITH!
too funny.

peace

Any Neuman will be heads above the Studio Projects or The Rode. Like I said before, the TLM 103 is not a bad mic, its just seems to lack some magic. It will not butcher your sound, but it will not help it that much (others experience may very)

If you have a chance, try out an Audio Technica tube 4060. Its a truly wonderful mic on a ton of applications. It may not have that "Neuman" word attatched to it, but its got that "tube" word which gets alot of folks excited.

Also keep in mind that a Microtech-Geffel UM70 will be a close contender to a Neuman U87 for half the price and it has an actual Neuman M7 capsule in it (which a U87 does not). Neuman and Microtech-Geffell were the same company before the Berlin wall went up.

I find the Gefell M930 the "better version" of the TLM103.

ive owned many mics over many years including neumanns.
my suggestion would be to check out CAD range of mics which imho are great value for money. i also like anything with the beyer logo on.

You could try the bcm104 from Neumann. It's designed as a broadcast mic, but a lot of people are using it for vocals with some luck. And it's in the same range as the tlm103

Why don't you find a good microphone dealership (music instrument store) and test a few microphones. Compare them on how they sound to you and not their brand. Maybe for your needs a Shure KSM 32 might be more useful than a 103 and for half the price. Neumanns are awesome, and so are Ferraris, but if you live in a farm, maybe a Ferrari is not the right car for you right?
