Try a SM57. I'm serious. I have 4033's and KM184's but if you're trying to tight mic it, give a 57 a shot.

A Beta 57 is also a good choice, in my experience.

I'd start with a dynamic, possibly a Ribbon up close and a condenser further out for a room sound.

Since I am the oldest and maybe least experienced with modern gear, I will give you my idea for a LIVE, Binaural sound for your banjo. TWO matched omni condenser mikes (mine were AKG C451E, or Syncron/Fairchild) spaced 8 inches apart. Banjo placed at the apex of the triangle. Further back is fine for the room acoustics. No mixing/equalization. Pure binaural sound. Google: Collection 1957-1988

I record a lot of live performances, so this mic does serve well for sound reinforcement, as well as making decent recordings.
