MXL 770, Sm57, d112, MCA sp1, Audix I5
Try them all and see which one you like best. There is no absolute correct answer to that question, but there are many who will swear by the SM57. It's a legend.

Start with the Shure SM57, and stop then.

You know, he didn't exactly say what kind of guitar...

Electric: Use the 57 or the 15 to mic up the cab
Acoustic: Either the SP1 or the 770

You can also use the SP1 and 770 on the cab if they'll take the SPLs (which most should). You might need to position them further back than you would a dynamic.

I'd even try the D112 if you like a lot of bottom end sound. Specially if you do a lot of drop-D tunning.
Just try them all and play around with placement. You may even want to run a couple of mics on the cab. Your ears will be the final judge.

Sounds like a pretty unanimous choice for the 57 on the cab, which I would echo.

For an interesting experiment, especially for getting a really thick guitar sound, try the 57 right on the cab, then putting the 770 or SP1 in the opposite corner on a tall boom. Sounds cool if you can catch the right waves - really fat. Just watch out for the natural bass trap of the corner.
