ok, so ive run into some money and am thinkin about getting this jcm 800 50 watt combo they're sellin at my local music shop for $775. I've tried it out and i really like the sound...im into that 70's/80's ramones/acdc-type feel. although ive heard people like angus young used the jmp's...is it worth holding out for one of these??? also the good thing bout the 800 is that it can distort at a low master volume... ive heard the jmp's gotta be cranked full volume to have any bite...so yah any advice would be appreciated before i crack and just go buy the damn 800

...also this might sound lame but i feel like of im gonna throw down money for a marshall i should go for a stack....honestly the one speaker combo just looks so damn small...would a 50 watt stack be any louder/more powerful than the combo?

Aside from the looks, you could also get a 412 cab in the future and unhook the internal speaker. Then you still have portability of a combo. But just not the look of a half stack.

The 412 will give a lot more low end to your sound, but both will still be absurdly loud unless you are gigging.

The single channel JCM800 is the same amp as the late 70's master volumes, but ya, I think AC/DC is the non-master volume.

That price seems a little steep for a 1x12 combo. I'd look for a used head and stick it on a 2x12 cab. But yeah, even the combo is gonna be pretty darn loud. You can always get an attenuator.

The JCM800 is touted by a lot of guys as the last great Marshall amp.

Totally agreed.
Also, a 50 watt amp will be loud enough for anyhting that you do. I have a 30 watt Sound City that just murders my ears with room to spare. Tubes are weird like that.

nice. thanx for the info...i think im gonna keep lookin for a head, its just hard to find good used stuff out here in western masss

You may also consider the Silver Jubilee as another one to check out. A lot of Marshallheads speak that it was the best amp Marshall ever produced.

stacks are for suckers who end up breaking their back moving their rig around just to look cool.

i used to be one lol

If you want to hear the Marshall JCM900 4100 Dual Reverb just check out the tunes on my link below. (100 or 50 watts switchable) I use the head with a 4X12 cabinet but record direct from the record out jack on the back. I think you can get a combo too. But it's probably $600 bucks (or more) just for the used head. So it'll cost even more for the cabinet.....just another option to consider....

While I am certainly no expert, I say screw the 4 12 cabinet - get a combo - Plenty loud enough. I have a marshall 18 watt non-mastervolume 1 12 combo, and it is excrutiatingly (sp?) loud. It's my first amp w/o a master volume, and I don't think I will EVER go back.......

I would agree as long as it renders the sound you're looking for. I personaly like to pick my speakers but that's to taste. If you gigging and you can meet the above, the combo is the way to go as long as it can deliver the volume. My middle of the road has been a head unit with a 2x12 speaker cab. The full cab thing is just a bit over the top. I mean it's cool...it's loud but I've never been in a situation where I had to have that much.

None of the above . . .

Buy a Boogie - all the sound you want and as your tastes change, teh amp can change with you.

Buy a Boogie, live happily ever after.
