hi guys, in need of advice on audio interface stuff. i've done recording on 4-8 tracks but not to sure about how to get the most out of recording with my pc (xp). basically i want to be able to record up to a whole band so want to start with 8 ins/outs and use my pc as a multitrack and use mainly outboard gear. i have just read a right up on the 'ST audio DSP3000 M-port' and at £689 it seems good for the features. however, i've also spotted the behringer 'ultragain pro ADA8000' (ad/da converter)
and was wondering if this will do the same tasks? it has 8ins balanced xlr/trs 8 balanced xlr outs with mic pre's, +48 on each but no inserts for outboard. however its like £500 cheaper. i don't think it comes with a PCI card like the DSP3000, so how would i connect each channel? and could the behringer provide low latency? aagghh someone help me. if the behringer could save me money i would rather use the left over cash on beer? women? oh no decent mics.

I'd take the ST Audio over the Behringer. Also look into a Delta 1010, Aardvark 24/96 (I think that's the 8i/8o), Echo has one that 8i/8o, ummm... Depending on price, the Hammerfall Multiface is really good.

the two models you mention are what i was first intersted in (as well as MOTU models) but then ths ST AUDIO DSP3000 caught my eye. i like the fact each channel has its own TRS insert and you can view the input and output of each channel via LED meters on the front panel. it also comes with the PCI card which i think is a good thing? (not to up to scratch on souncards yet) and the price is good. i believe the aardvark you mention comes with a PCI card too but regarding the DELTA??? are there not extra accessories i'd have to buy? as for the behringer is it to downmarket? thanks for this

for once i wont defend behringer

have you looked at the st audio c-port? or does the m-port have preamps? wouldnt you rather have a mixer for preamps? behringer would probably have low latency but it doesnt come with a pci card cause its for adat not computer.

ok maybe just a little defending

downmarket? as in lesser quality of people? i think not and i use a about 12 behringer products in the course of a week and i havent hated any of it....

yes DSP3000 M PORT has pre amps in each channel, +48 power, individual gain control on each channel, XLR inputs and outputs, loads stuff. no need for mixer really. or pre amps etc. not slating BEHRINGER at all if i can get quality on cheaper hardware i will, ideally so i can put the rest towards good mics. do you no if the BEHRINGER ULTRAGAIN ADA8000 would work distorteddrumble?

i'd say jump on it. especially if you dont have a mixer with direct outs on it....i kinda like having my system be interchangeable so i can take the mixer to do a live show if needed and then come back home and plug in a few cables and keep trucking. oh and fill me in on some british sayings here......do yall still say "cherio"?

For the price of the DSP3000 you could have the RME DIGI 9652 HDSP card and two ADA8000s that would give you twice the number of inputs each with XLR& Phantom. I have two ADA8000s and the older RME Digi9652 card and it's a great combo at a pretty attractive price.

Here's (http://tinyurl.com/u9v9) some figures and graphs about the audio performance of my system measured with the RightMark 5.1 audio analyzer program.

Hopefully someone with a DSP3000 would publish their measurements for comparition. The test results of ST Audio DSP24 found here (http://audio.rightmark.org/test/hoontech/staudio-dsp24-mk2-2496.html) certainly doesn't give an impression of high quality audio performance but maybe their breakout boxes have better ADCs.

i' ve just had a reply from BEHRINGER saying as long as i have an ADAT soundcard the ADA8000 will work perfectly well. so how much are ADAT cards and how would each indivdual channel connect form the ADA8000 to the soundcard? aaggghhh!!! typical solve one problem find another. help me guys
