Where to put compressors

Hi,

We have a sampler running out to a desk then out to a dat.

The question we have is where in line should you place compressors to get the best use of them.

Is it:

a) between the sampler and the desk

b) on an insert on the desk (ring return)

Any suggestions much appreciated
