Hi,

Does anyone know a good place online to purchase a used synth for about $500. I am purchasing from Canada. I have tried ebay but I think that it is corrupt. I think that ppl are bidding on their own items to drive prices up. Some ppl even have reserves that are higher than the cost of the product new. Is there a popular place online where ppl sell their used music gear outside of ebay? It just seems liek something like this would exist but I can't find it.

Thanks,
Peter.

By the way, for those who are curious form previous threads, I am now leaning towards purchasing a Roland XP-30. It just seems that so many ppl recommend this synth. And Roland have a reputation for making one of the better more realistic piano sounds. The only thing that I am not crazy about is the fact that it only has 61 keys. I find that I sometimes run out of keys on the low end with my previous piece of crap, the casio ct-460.

Here is a business selling a used XP-30 that will probably not rip you off (if you are okay with the price)... I have heard of these guys before and I think I might have bought a keyboard from them years ago via ebay (some buisnesses and pawn shops use ebay to sell musical instruments)

Speaking of ebay...I steer away from people selling expensive items who have very small ratings (meaning they have only sold a few items and have gotten only a few "thumbs up" from their customers)...but if the seller has a positive rating of 50 or more (without any damning negative comments) or if it is a buisness with a return policy then I personally would still consider a purchase via ebay.

$800 US... Yikes!!!. I think that I can beat that on ebay but thanks for the site though... I'll check out their other keyboards as well.

Maybe so. But the good folks @ ebay know ALL about people bidding on their own stuff, reserve prices higher than retail, blah blah blah.

It's evolved into the only game in town and using good judgement (and mawtangent laid out some good common sense rules) you CAN find good deals and get good used stuff.

Have a little faith in your fellow man, and with the help of the tools that ebay has available you should be pretty safe. I've been a registered user since 1999 and have yet to encounter what I felt was a truly bad deal.

I use eBay all the time. As ssscientist says, if you use good judgement and common sense you will most likely be fine. For the most part, my eBay experience has been excellent, and I've met some cool people. on the dark side, I *have* purchased auction items that were misrepresented by the seller. I have also had dealers misrepresent the condition of used items to me as well, so it's not just an eBay factor. In fact, I would have to say that when it comes to used gear I've had better luck on eBay than with so-called reputable dealers.

The other thing on eBay is to know your prices and not get sucked into a bidding war and over pay for an item. Be patient. And as far as used items selling for more than new, just don't bid on those auctions.

If it were me buying a keyboard, I'd probably want to buy locally so I could play it and make sure all the keys were working. That would also save shipping, which will be fairly significant on a large item like a keyboard. Rack gear and other small stuff is easy on eBay.

I bought a Juno 106 on eBAY "guaranteed" to not have bad VCA chips. Seller had good feedback. I got burned. Beware.

I would never buy a keyboard from ebay (I likely would not buy any instrument from ebay). As already indicated, I would want to try every key and make sure all the electronis do what is expected.

If you were indicated $800 for a used XP30 - that does seem too high (although I have not priced used XPs).

I do own an XP30 (purchased new) and I think it was one of the best values around at the time. The stock piano sounds are decent, but because that have an add on piano card - I'm sure they made sure the on board piano less than perfect. However, I have made many decent recording using the on board pianos.

As far as eBay goes, I've just started using it, but have had only good experiences so far. *knock on wood* Twelve to be exact. :)

and........
I sometimes run out of keys on the low end with my previous piece of crap, the casio ct-460.

Funny, I currently use the Casio "Crapio" CT-420, I got it for free. :D

How could you possibly use the crapio ct-460 for anything... it does not have key sensitivity so it sounds lifeless.
