Ok, let me bring it from the top. I was on my way down to Mars today to purchase the Roland JX-305, when I began to have second thoughts. The music I compose was initially hip-hop, but it has since evolved into so much more. I still use loops and I guess the music could still be classified as hip-hop, but I'm working with a guitarist and saxophones now, and the music reflects my three primary influences: Marley, Hendrix and Coltrane. Basically I'm asking:

1: Does the sound library of the JX-305 sound suitable for music suiting these tastes? I ask this because although I like the sounds offered on the 305, I know it's primarily a dance synth. I'm mainly using it for the sounds, as I'm hooking it up to my computer, and will use that for sampling and sequencing.

2. Aside from this, I'm looking for good software. I'm addicted to Cool Edit Pro, and I'm most comfortable with that. Still however, I'm beginning to get a nagging feeling that it's time to move onto something better. Any suggestions? Because whatever I choose I want it to be somewhat similar.

There are so many more questions I have yet to ask -- this is only the tip of the way-too-big iceberg -- but this is all that escaped my currently adled brain. Hopefully it will ooze out in additional postings, but for now, any help with my current questions would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the DIGITAL info (link from first page Home Recording Dot Com) about software. You can also read a lot of older posts here at the bb. Cool Edit is great, and if you're down with it, no problem. There are however tons of other cool stuff. If you're patient, you'll find the answers to everything here on the bb...good luck...gibs
