JeffLancaster said:I don't get it - this is at least the second rap bashing thread I've seen in the last two days. Why are you guys doing this? Come on, think about why we're all into this hobby (or profession for those lucky few). It's because we're all interested in making art - in this case the art of sound. Not everyone has the same taste, but there's a reason that every genre exists. It's because there is a segment of the population that gets an emotional charge by the art of every genre. Now I'll be the first to admit that rap and hip-hop aren't my favorite forms of music, but that doesn't make me respect those that are involved with it any less. As it's been pointed out, there probably are some who don't have a lot of talent and think because they have the right clothes and attitude, they can call themselves a "producah". But this isn't any different from say, the guy who has long hair, piercings, a studded belt, and a crappy guitar, and calls himself a metal musician even though he can't play worth a damn, or a guy calling himself a country musician just because he has a hat, boots and a pickup. The fact is, I believe some of these guys on this board are putting a lot of heart and soul into their craft that is hip hop or rap, and should be treated with the same respect as all the rest of us.
Also, for those of you that say it takes no talent to rap, try it some time and see how easy it is. Although I consider myself a reasonably decent singer and guitarist, I can't come close to doing anything that sounds like decent rap - it takes a different set of skill which take time to develop. Does it only take "half" the talent because there's no "pitch" involved? - My God, get a life!

I play drums, trumpet, some guitar and keyboard. I'm also (primarily) a rapper.
But apparently that takes no talent.
You're a retard, obviously. Please keep your helmet in tact, I'd hate for you to fall and hurt yourself.
Well if you hate hip hop so much, may I ask why are you in a public hip hop forum, fighting with people over the internet? Why bother? Obviously the people in this forum do enjoy hip hop and you don't, so why even waste your time with a post like this, in which your intentions are obviously to get in a flaming war, fighting with people behind a computer screen. It's not worth it. I'm sorry that you do not like hip hop, so be it. I am also sorry that you are too insecure with yourself that you have to come arguing at people through a website about a music genre that you obviously don't understand.smuffjules said:Yes, it takes an awful lot less talent.
Other musicians work their asses off to tr to perfect an artform, and then some smart ass rapper comes along who decided he wanted to be a rapper a couple of years ago records a couple of songs and then has the nerve to say it's just as much an artform as any other music.
NO IT IS NOT!
It doesn't require anything like the skill dedication and determination then to play say Paganini's 24 caprices.
Rapper CANNOT claim to be in the same category of talent as a concert violinist who does this, or many other forms of music that require YEARS of technical practice.
Yes, it's great that tey make fabulous money. That's fine, and I'm VERY happy for them since a lot of them boast that they would otherwise be living a life of poverty and crime. I think that's a Great thingthat they make millions, but they CANNOT claim to have the same skill level as a real dedicated skilled virtuoso instrumentalist or Opera singer.

JeffLancaster said:You know, on some level you may be right. Perhaps it takes longer to learn to play Paganini's 24 Caprices (whatever the hell that is) than it does to become proficient at performing a rap number. I'm sure it also takes longer to perfect that, than it does to become an accomplished singer/guitarist (one of my main aspirations). Do you want to bash me for being a guitar player rather than a concert violinist?
I just don't understand why you feel the need to come into the forum and put these guys down, just because you don't appreciate their form of art. A lot of these guys do enjoy this genre, and I'm sure they work very hard at becoming accomplished at it. Perhaps they haven't had 40 years of daily practice or whatever it would take on average to master one of the classical pieces you mentioned. Most of these guys aren't old enough to have done that yet, anyway. But that doesn't mean they don't put as much time and effort EACH DAY into their chosen craft. Some of the guys on this board not only put effort into writing/reciting lyrics, they work very hard at putting together studios and perfecting their engineering skills, just as many of us members from the other genres do.
The bottom line is - these guys are putting their effort into producing a product which they hope others will enjoy, and if you look at what music sells these days, it appears that others do enjoy this genre. So really, WHO CARES which type of music takes the longest to perfect. SERIOUSLY, why can't you just back off and go practice your violin or something?
*EDIT* Aah, I just read your post above - you must've wrote that whilst I was busy typing away. Looks like maybe you finally get it?

As if the name calling wasn't appropriate?smuffjules said:Psssst....
Really I just wanted to open up a can of worms with this thead. Sorry if I offended anyone. Well, I just wanted to see peoples reactions.
It's interesting to see how people resort to name calling etc. I know it wouldn't happen if we were all in the pub together, but I just couldn't resist on the rap/beats/hip hop section.
Personally, I don't care for rap, but many people do, and if they enjoy it, that's great for them. I realize that.
I'm relatively new to this website, so now I have my "controversial thread" needs satisfied.
I'm sure it's all been said a hundred times though.

If we were in a pub together, you wouldn't have enjoyed the outcome quite as much.
Welcome to HR.com I'm also a mixing and mastering engineer. If you ever need any work, let me know. I'll be sure to charge you triple my rate.

Im not takin anything personal, but you will never hear me say I hate some genre of music...I will tell you I dont listen to it..but i respect everything and artist/musician is doin in his or her genre of music.famous beagle said:I don't understand why y'all get so bent out of shape and take this so personally. It's your prerogative to like what you want.
