I don't understand why y'all get so bent out of shape and take this so personally. If y'all told me you hate the Beatles or Radiohead or Wilco or another one of my favorite bands, I might ask why, but I wouldn't call you a close-minded, elitist prick. It's your prerogative to like what you want.

^no your not a hypocrite, your just ignorant............... tell me is it really that blissfull?

we get bent out of shape because this is the music that we do....... this is our love and our passion.... then for someone to come and try to down what we do or say it isn't music is enough to get anyone upset.......

and FYI you didnt say you hate 50 Cent you said you hate hip hop....... which is even worse because hip hop isn't just a type of music, its a culture, a lifestyle, a movement......... so to me to say you hate HIP HOP in general is like sayin you hate me....... and you dont even know me.

Okay... Let's just say that music is in the ear of the beholder... It suddenly occurred to me that I don't care what anyone thinks...

And that's what I think.. And you prolly don't care.. Yippe!

I disagree with a super-superiority-complex...

How can you tell me that Bob Dylan isn't a musician, if the man creates music (be that original or not)?? I call BS....

Also, this entertainer thing.......... You do realize that Louis Armstrong's "High Society" had DIALOG that was recited each time, live at least....

Next thing you'll say is that Barry Manilow is a better singer than Janis Joplin...

Cough Cough... May I ask.. Why exactly it makes a difference? This is worse the quazi-genres... We'd be better off debating the war in Iraq.. more productive, at least..

Tell me how/why I'm ignorant. Seriously. What's the basis of your insult? Is it because I don't like the type of music you like?

ignorant in the way that I said it wasn't ment to be an insult ignorant is a lack of knowledge of a certain topic.... so to the hip hop culture and rap music your ignorant to a lot of the aspects as you stated yourself you based your HATE of the small percentage of the music you hear on the radio

Come on, man .... are you honestly going to sit there and tell me you've never said something like "I hate country" or "I hate death metal" or "I hate disco" or ... anything like that? I have a REALLY hard time believing that.

Sure, I'll grant you that. I'm pretty ignorant on the whole hip hop/rap world. The reason that I'm ignorant is because I don't find it appealing and therefore haven't felt the need to further my knowledge about it.

What about the Nazi regime? Do you like what they stood for? Do you feel the need to dig deep to discover the hidden treasures that lay embedded in their beliefs?

What about the KKK? Do you know much about them?

I can answer no to both of those questions because, in my opinion, I've heard enough to decide that I don't really care to hear more.

And say what you will, but this is the exact same reason why you've got much more hip hop and rap in your collection than you do bluegrass or classical (I'm guessing)

This is my last relpy as this is getting pointless and I have work 2 do........
About the Nazi regime I actually find them very interesting Hitler was a fucking genious is some aspects and if he would have waited untill the summer we more then likely wouldnt be having this conversation..... and if we were it wouldnt be in english......
And about that KKK stuff I know a lot about them I know what they stand for I have read things about them and I can honestly say that I dont care for them or what they stand for.....

and actually I like classical music I have some in my "collection" of course I have more rap but thats because I like rap better doesnt mean I dont like anything else

I don't get it - this is at least the second rap bashing thread I've seen in the last two days. Why are you guys doing this? Come on, think about why we're all into this hobby (or profession for those lucky few). It's because we're all interested in making art - in this case the art of sound. Not everyone has the same taste, but there's a reason that every genre exists. It's because there is a segment of the population that gets an emotional charge by the art of every genre. Now I'll be the first to admit that rap and hip-hop aren't my favorite forms of music, but that doesn't make me respect those that are involved with it any less. As it's been pointed out, there probably are some who don't have a lot of talent and think because they have the right clothes and attitude, they can call themselves a "producah". But this isn't any different from say, the guy who has long hair, piercings, a studded belt, and a crappy guitar, and calls himself a metal musician even though he can't play worth a damn, or a guy calling himself a country musician just because he has a hat, boots and a pickup. The fact is, I believe some of these guys on this board are putting a lot of heart and soul into their craft that is hip hop or rap, and should be treated with the same respect as all the rest of us.

Also, for those of you that say it takes no talent to rap, try it some time and see how easy it is. Although I consider myself a reasonably decent singer and guitarist, I can't come close to doing anything that sounds like decent rap - it takes a different set of skill which take time to develop. Does it only take "half" the talent because there's no "pitch" involved? - My God, get a life!

Here's the thing though. Yes I'm basing my opinion of hip hop on what I hear on the radio. I'm not pretending that I go and seek out the "better" underground hip hop.

Are you going to tell me that you honestly seek out the "better" underground country music?

The difference is that I'm not a hypocrite; I'm being honest.
I don't seek out underground country. But I don't go around saying "I hate country music" and paint their entire genre with a brush of idiocy.

There are many country songs I've enjoyed over the years. My favorite country song of all time is "Don't Take the Girl". I can appreciate the storytelling talent, as it's inspiring to hear an artist paint a mental picture with lyrics.

Maybe you just can't keep up with the lyrics in hip-hop so you can't glean anything from it? That's understandable.

I'm not a hypocrite at all. I don't dismiss entire genre's of music based on my limited exposure to it from commercial radio. That's ignorance. Calling you ignorant is truthful, and not an insult. You're simply ignorant of our genre, and that's the truth.

Thanks, Jeff.

That was very intelligent and well thought reply. Thanks for contributing.

Blah!

I didn't Say Bob wasn't a musician, he's great, I just said that some of his stuff sucked.
I will say however, that there is no rapper around that I have heard that has the skill of any of the name Jazz or classical or top session cats.
We need to have some sort of superiority thing going on, otherwise the worst shittiest musicians can ge by just saying, "This is my style and how I want to sing it" and be crap.

What makes you think that Barry Manilow is no Janis Joplin? Same reason right? What you said was the same. You think Barry is awful compared to Janis.
Well I think that rap requires the leaset amount of talent to perform. therefore, all rapper are massively inferior to any trained musicians and a whole lot of others that spent time practicing scales, licks etc.

Someone should teach you about semantics. The amount of redundant idiocy in this thread is astounding.

I wonder what the true definition of a "Musician" is...

Which begs the question, what defines "music"..?

The operative word in that last sentence, is or. All three aren't needed.

Welcome to 6th grade research.

Based on official definitions the entire world is using, one can assume those who perform anything rhythm based, is in fact a musician.

Whether you like it or not, and regardless of pitch*.

*This word never mentioned in either definition yet your only arguing point. How ironic.

Yes. You couldn't be more correct.
But, rapping reqires FAR less skill, No training.
Music it is, ART IT IS NOT!!

It's funny, because when I think how easy it is to write my hip-hop music, I generally assume it must be 10 times easier to write rock or pop, or any other music. I mean, Hip-Hop utilizes at least 16 bars of lyrics per verse, where the bubble-gum rock like Nickelback might use 4 lines of lyrics over a full verse.

So it's safe to assume all rockers or other "musicians" are complete idiots, right? I mean wow... I use more lyrics in one verse than they write for a full song. What morons.
yea...but writing lyrics does not make you a musician.

Yes I admitted I am ignorant regarding hip hop. I didn't say I dismissed the entire genre. I simply said I hated it.

I really think y'all are taking my comment way out of context. People say they hate a style of music all the time, and they're not meaning "there's not one talented person that's ever existed in that genre and the whole genre is crap and it should be wiped from existence and it sucks royally and blah blah blah." Y'all inferred those things from my simple statement.

It's really this simple. There are styles of music I really love, ones I like, ones I don't like, ones I hate etc. Obviously I don't love every band that's in one certain genre. It's obvious (or it should be) that I'm speaking in generaliztions here.

Just because I say "I hate hip hop" doesn't mean that I hate [insert your favorite artist here] personally and think he/she is without talent. I'll admit Metallica has some talent, but I really hate their music. I'll admit Snoop Dogg has some talent, but I really hate his music too. It doesn't mean I think I'm superior than it, better than it, or anything like that. I never said that. It just doesn't do it for me on any level, much like Nickelback doesn't do it for you (or me) at all.

Your ignorance knows no bounds.

I play drums, trumpet, some guitar and keyboard. I'm also (primarily) a rapper.

But apparently that takes no talent.

You're a retard, obviously. Please keep your helmet in tact, I'd hate for you to fall and hurt yourself.
