hi,
i'm looking for a second hand AKG C12,
tried ebay and no luck, is there anywhere else i can try?

Here in California we have whats called the 'Recycler' magazine, I'm not sure where you're from but you may want to look into something like that. Recycler is available online too, check it out. Keep trying ebay also. Froogle may be another place to look, you may be able to find a new one fairly cheap.

Or try a good clone like the FLEA 12.

FLEA do a money-back guarantee if you don't like it, I think. They did tell me that no-one has asked for their money back yet.

This mic is an exact replica of C12 and involves an exact replica of the original power supply N12 with pattern switch U2. As standard, it is equipped with Tim Campbell's CT12 capsule - great choice if you are considering the clones of original CK12. The tube is GE 6072 in five-star version which generates minimum noise and microphonic. These tubes were produced especially for military purposes and were used also in the original C12s. The transformer is our own replica of original . Considering the sound, it is simply “Rolls-Royce”. In some applications this mic is pretending seriously, but its benefits will stand out during mixdown. It’s fantastic for vocals, acoustic instruments as well as ambient miking. Those, who have not experienced, will not believe. The full set contains microphone in wooden box, PSU, U2 switch, cables with swivel mount, safe portable case.

Wow John that FLEA looks like a great microphone! As do the others upon following your link.
Weird that there is only one US distributor ..... Do you have a close idea to a dollar figure for one of these?

The FLEA 12 is € 3,090.00 in the FLEA on-line shop.

Options are:

mic solid wooden box (+ € 120.00)

shockmount (+ € 135.00)

safe case (+ € 300.00)

vintage hardware (PSU + U2 switch) (+ € 1,780.00)

I'm not sure what the €/$ exchange rate is.

FLEA make great mics. I went to see them when I was last in Slovakia and was very impressed.

Sound on Sound will be reviewing the FLEA 47 in the next (September) issue I think.

John, I had the good fortune of being able to sing for extended periods into a Telefunken USA repro of a C12 at the last couple of NAMM shows in L.A. (It was awesome!-like their 251 IMHO)

So...

Have you had a chance to listen to the Telefunken USA version?

BTW thanks very much for hanging out with amateur folks like myself. Appreciate it when pro's like yourself,
Ty Ford, and Ronan Chris Murphy contribute here.

Chris

P.S. Not a C12 of course, but the recent "meaty" Sennheiser MK4 is now added, to my other fave under $1000
stock LDC-Studio Projects CS series (transparent).

I have not heard the Telefunken (nb: they have no connection with the original Telefunken other than the name, I understand), but I understand it is pretty decent.

IMHO FLEA make the closest to the originals - I know they spent about 5-years researching the C 12 capsule and how to reproduce it exactly, including purchasing about 20 (I think) original C 12s for their research. They only cracked it about this time last year as the C 12 capsule is very complicated and FLEA said they were surprised AKG could consistently make such a capsule in the 1950's.

I do know that FLEA do make body parts for other manufacturers, as their engineering is so good.

No probs, I'm just happy to help.

Yes, this new MK 4 does seem to be excellent value for money and seems to punch well above its weight.
