When do you buy monitors ???

When mastering and mixing, do you try stereo speakers that you have hanging around the house with the eq set flat first or do you head to the store and buy monitors without testing the stereo speakers on a mix ?

You buy monitors when you finally get tired of screwing around with headphones and playing your mixes on a variety of shitty sound systems.

When you get monitors, and learn their sound, you make adjustments that help you get much closer to what you want right off the bat, in the first mix. *Then* you listen through headphones and through shitty sound systems and tweak accordingly.

Monitors are used throughout the entire recording process. They are your reference for all sounds that you track and mix.

Buy them when you can afford them.
