Classic Fender heavies (celluloid only) for electric and Dunlop 1mm hard nylons (the white ones with the flaming cat) for acoustic. Sometimes a stainless steel on either for a little more attack.

Plastic and soft nylon have no feel.:p

300+ picks...

I started with really thin dunlops I think 36's, those are too thin, they break. Over time I have gradually moved up in thickness, preferring the solid picking over the flappy effect of thinner ones. Dunlops are nice cause the lettering you can hang on too. As stated above I have in excess of 300 picks, none the same. Ive tried so many because I sliced my thumb pretty nasty once, and there isnt a helluva lot of feeling in it anymore or strength, or anything...I keep coming back to the dunlops.

Although recently I have found some metal picks, with a nice groove in the for sliding, you can really get a solid picking sound with those babys. Plus they also have raised lettering, so I can hang on to 'em. Damned if I can rememebr what theyre called tho :D, Ill get back to you on that one. (altho the paint comes off these metal ones...leaving your fingers nicely painted)

Fender medium.

I used Dunlop nylons before, until I found out that they added to my many broken strings because of the sharp edges and raised lettering. It felt like it "caught" the strings much easier. Then I switched back to Fender, and didn't break any strings since.

Dunlop picks feel too weird.

One more for Fender medium!
I started on these babies 3 months ago from the Gator .96.
My tone/ attack is less harsh.

I use Gibson Thins. The big tri-angle ones. I wasn't going to post but I noticed nobody else is using them.

.....I still dont know why I posted that

the heviest thickest non-bending sucker in the store. if i can't find a pick at a gig its no big deal...i just use a quarter.

i use clayton .63's for most of my acoustic work-they seem to be the proper middle ground between hard and soft, for extended dynamics-if i want a less yielding pickstroke, i use it perpendicularly ot the strings.

for electric, i typically use "something heavy"-i have heavy dunlops (mixed opinions on the feel of various kinds there-i tend to like a smooth pick feel), heavy pick boys (studded, and "stubby" bass picks), a stainless steel pick, some others, and some picks i made myself with a hammer and a coin, just hammering them out flat on conrete, then sharpening with a knife sharpener (and they're SHARP!)-they were neat, but i don't use em much anymore-think i took out strings pretty easily with them.

i NEVER, EVER use fender picks, even though i think the feel and design aren't too bad-if i play hard for an hour, they'll be largely destroyed, and smell like pine trees(and they get hot, too)-crappy materials, in my opinion.

any other suggestions for long-lasting picks in the general medium range?

Great place for me to jump back in. That is the reason I don't use phenolic picks anymore. Nothing worse than to get half way through a part and realize that a small crack has developed at the business end of the pick and it just caught on the e string.

Any finger pickers out there? I saw an ad for "finger tone" picks and they look interesting. Anyone ever use them?

I use different ones all the time. Fender Heavy, Dunlop Jazz III's and Stubby's, Tortex, Clayton. I have hundreds of picks around, and I'll just grab whatever's handy. If I'm not diggin' it, I find a different one. I find that I gravitate towards the Fender Heavy a lot.
For bass, fingers rule. Sometimes for single coil strats too.

ok..now I'm pissed

My two oldest kids are players and last night they came to visit. This morning I'm looking everywhere and they have KIPED every one of my Dunlop .60's.....left behind a Fender thin...not that I don't have any other picks, I just prefer the Dunlops. Obviously so do my kids!

KIDS......
