If I didn't have the effect(s), I would play the song anyways, it would be the same, but different. It would be the same notes, but there's no way I can mimic a chorus or a wah, etc. However, I've easily gotten by on acoustic sessions plenty of times with no problem. The only people I would assume it bothers are the ultra-anal. I can respect you for not using effects, but don't look down on others that do use them simply because they do. What it comes down to is the song, not what we use to create it.

True, it may be a bit hard to emulate a chorus or a wah. Wah simulation by using your tonecontrol is great though.

Heh I do not look down on folks who do use effects, I wouldn't dare to :D as I use them myself too, but I also like the idea of using nothing then just a guitar and your fingers from time to time.

For the last few years I've been useing a Line 6 AX2 with the Floorboard. A decent enough amp. Definately NO problem being heard. Now I'm in love with my Rivera Pubster. Guitar> Cry Baby > Rivera.
Guitars; 98 American Strat, 71 Telecaster, a new Schecter PT Special, a late 50's NAtional Val-Pro, 63-64 Gibson Melody Maker and a Danelectro 12 string. I must admit I play the Strat, Tele and Schecter the most by far.

Actually I do, plus another 4-space rack with vocal wireless units and in-ear monitors. The upper rack has power control, power amp, and guitar MIDI units. The lower rack has guitar effects plus guitar wireless.

I use twin 2x12 cabinets and a Behringer FCB1010 floor controller to handle both the pure guitar and guitar synth options.

cheap surf stack!

line6 duoverb hd ( run you about $400 now not perfect duplications of vintage amps but i like some origionality to my sound anyways. and amazing reverbs!)

homemade 4x12 loaded with emininces

guitars- either barebones ebay kit telecaster, or customized strat.

i love cheap gear

Epiphone LP Standard through a Mesa Boogie 50 Caliber +. Other bits include a Marshal MG 15w, Dunlop Crybaby, and a Maton acoustic guitar. Looking for a cheap axe to put my spare EMGs into and some time to actually play and record. ;)

Guitar Rig

ES-335, Fender Deluxe Strat Ultra, Fender Telecaster Deluxe, Ovation Legend 12, into a Mesa Boogie Mark 4, with one 12" closed back Thiele cabinet with a Mesa speaker, and one 12" open back cabinet loaded with a EV speaker. Boss GT-6 for effects and tuner. Klotz cables for everything.

I'm not a minimalist.

Customized Ibanez (fitted with switches and a button, 7 different pickup combos) goes into Digitech Whammy pedal, then into Line6 Flextone. Flextone handles most of the tone, and is controlled via floorboard controller. FX loop of Line6 goes through Powerbook, running custom effects program built in Max/MSP (contains delays, ring mod, some other weird shit). Max/MSP is controlled by a Behringer MIDI foot controller.

I've learned to tapdance in my own special way.

Signal--->Boss Tuner--->Jimi Hendrix Crybaby Wah--->Boss Distortion--->DOD Distortion--->Peavey Classic 50

Guess you could say I'm a minimalist

mid 1990's Gibson SG 1961 reissue junior single p-90
2 Sunn o))) mid 70's concert lead solid state 200w heads
2 Sunn o))) early and mid 70's 6x10 cabs with Eminence legend and mojo tones.
Yamaha DG Stomp to stereo the guitar, tune, add some headroom, soften the edge of the solid state heads.
One time I got drowned out in a band so I added the second amp. Never, never, never again.
