What's the significance of buss speed in re. to performance/plug-ins?

How important is buss speed in regard to performance, esp. in terms of plug-in FX? I'm going to upgrade my processor and mobo in very short order. They're a little shy of being able to handle as many plug-in FX as I want to use, at least for 24/96 stuff. I'm kind of sneaking in another AMD vs. Intel question here because, while the AMD stuff is a little cheaper, the FSB maxes out at 400mHz while the P4 stuff goes up to 800mHz. I tried to find some idiot's guide that would explain the significance of buss speed to me but I didn't find much. By the way I currently have an AMD athlon 1.4GHz processor with an Iwill mobo that I believe has a n FSB speed of 333.

Oh, and what, if anything might it have to do with latency?

Oops! it's actually 133 Mhz

I hope this wasn't too dumb a question! Anyway, someone at work told me that the discrepency between the 400mHz and the 800mHz buss speed doesn't mean a whole lot because the AMD stuff "does more" per cycle.

I also found this link. Some of it is above my head but it certainly helped! http://www6.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20030414/
