The first and most important "cleaning" is of the disc itself.

For 78's you usually need a special stylus to fit the larger groove. Sometimes a custom stylus is used. Use a modern cartridge and stylus designed for the groove.

The most useful software for discs is a declicker. It works with 78's and other legacy discs.

Ditto on the above post. I have a vinyl collection exceeding 10,000 and of those over 1500 are the "brittle" 78's. I bought a "Spin-Clean" disc washer. Best money I ever spent. While I have a vintage Pioneer and Technics turntable for the LP's, they wont do 78rpm, so I bought a Stanton T.92 and the "78" stylus and it works great. The variable speed is key because back in the day not all 78's were cut at 78 rpm. The speed varied alot. So it nice to be able to change it a little to find that proper sound. Or of course you can always record at 33rpm and speed it up in the DAW (which I find doesnt work as well).
