What's the most versatile mic?

Imagine, you have to record an album with only two condenser mics and two dynamic mics. Price is not an issue.

You have to record drums, acoustic guitar, distorted electric guitar, acoustic and electric bass, vocals, horns, winds, percussion, a grand piano, a Hammond organ, violin, sitar and a couple of other very difficult to record instruments.

You have only two mic pre-amps, so you must track any instrument apart.

So you really need two pairs of "desert island" mics.
What would it be?

My choice would be a pair of Neumann M49's and a pair of Sennheiser MD421's

How about you?

a pair of 421's for dynamics

a pair of BLUE Bottles (with all of the capsules) for the condensers

That's my simple $11,000 solution! ;-)

Oops, I forgot about the capsules. That's more like a $16,000 solution...

Mmmm....421's seem to be very versatile mics.
I was thinking of pairs because for example, I would record a grand piano with a pair of M49's and a Hammond with an ORTF pair of 421's at some 2' distance. Remember, you have but one pair of mic pre's.

So I guess a 57 and a 421 don't make a decent pair, nor do an M149 and an M150.

Get the idea? :D

I would take an MD-441, a 421 (or just 2 441's), NO SM-57's, and maybe a pair of Elux251 in prefect working order.

Bear said 4 SM57's. :)

I could do an album with four MD-441's, I think, they are that good.

Pair of Schoeps SD condensers (or DPA's)
Pair of Royer ribbons (they're ALSO "dynamic" mikes!:))

<snip>

I rather imagine/dream about recording with the world largest mic collections. :)

1 Sennheiser MD441
1 AKG C414B-ULS
1 B.L.U.E. Bottle
1 AKG D112

If you can't make it sound good with one of those, it ain't worth recording.-Richie

AKG C3000
Marshall 2001
AKG C1000
Oktava MK219

Actually, I've never heard the Marshall or the Oktava. But I want to. :D

Lol... More cowbell... lol.

1. Matched pair of KM84's

2. Pair of U87's.

I should be able to record anything under the sun with that combination. Even drum set.

DJL, you're a cruel man. When you die, you're going to spend all eternity with a Neve console and those 4 mics.-Richie
