I figure a slight modification of the orignal thread might be fun.

So which GUITAR do you think is underrated?

I for my part like my 300 bucks SCHECTER C-1 FR a lot... mahog. body, maple neck body binding - figured maple top - a very nicely playing and well put together axe.

who's next?

I'd have to put in a vote for the whole Carvin line. Extremely high build quality, great prices and service.

They are damn nice looking guitars.

I have a very "soft spot" for underrated underdog top notch equipment.

For that reason I highly regard the Carvin tube heads (they already seem to have quite a following). I personally went with a SOVTEK Mig-60 all tube head (made in novosibirsk :) - for the same reason.

I also like "heritage" a lot as guitar brand (haven´t played one tho)

Ibanez RG220. Swap out the pickups and the tremolo (another $200.00) and you have a guitar that sounds and plays great. Mine plays as good as my $1600 jackson SL-1 and sounds just as good.

Cort Matt Guitar Murphy Signature Model. Good looks, solid versalite tone, great playablity for 500 or so. Can't beat it.

I have a Levinson Blade R1 strat which I'll never get rid of. Beautifully made, sounds excellent, stays in tune, quiet - had it for 12 years now and is still, despite serious road use in very good nick. I've played various real strats over the years and I wouldn't swap it for any of them.

I gotta put in a vote for Ibanez, I have a RG170 & GAX70, both fairly inexpensive and easy to play. Also the new Silvertone guitars are pretty decent too (if you like narrow fingerboards.)

I think that is entirely untrue. I have never heard anyone say a bad thing about Carvin guitars. They do not suit everyone (just like your LP Deluxe doesn't suit everyone), but there is no one I know who has a bad thing to say about their build quality. Sound is a personal judgment, and opinions are just that. Build quality is an objective thing, and Carvin's are very well made.

As for underrated, early sixties Epiphone's are great guitars. And though this is changing, the whole category of parlor guitars (the Martin single O, and the various related instruments) are nowhere near as common as they should be. All too often they are dismissed as being "too quite," or "lacking in bass." While it is true that they don't sound like a Dred, they have a gentle, intimate sound that makes them just wonderful. And they are rarely as quite as people assume, but that is just a function of where on the top the bridge falls, thanks to the twelve fret necks.

I think the Godin stuff has been underrated, but that seems to be changing.

fernandes guitars are underrated.
they play and sound nice, and are atleast trying to come up with new shapes instead of copying the old stuff (without being ridiculous)
the ravelles are really nice. also the sustainer system is pretty fun to play around with.

Wow I thought for sure I'd see SOMEBODY say ARIA,for the $ they Played/Looked Awesome, but the only thing is if you were looking for sound you'd definetley have to replace the pickups,I have an old zz Aria, got it at Daddy's like 5 years ago for $179.00 used. Installed Seymour Duncan's /Schaller Tuners,Great Guitar

Well, Light, judging from the used Carvin prices I see, SOMEBODY doesn't like 'em! Or maybe the prices are due to the fact that new ones are not that expensive (four years ago I bought a new, mahogany bass, w case and shipping, for something under $700). But I still think they are definitely not on the snobs' gear lists! We can't argue about their quality: I have played quite a few besides the one I have and each one was very nicely put together.

I have played just about everything. Certainly most of the brands/models
mentioned here so far. And... to be honest, I never really thought that
any of these guitars got an unfair "bad rap", or were truly underrated.
If someone were to say "this is crap" or "that is junk" may not really be
fair to say about most of these "lesser quality" guitars.
But.... when you judge a guitar there are many factors to consider when
assessing "quality". You may like the general sound or playability of a
certain guitar, but the criteria of true quality doesn't end there.
Furthermore, ever since the 80's, the electronic gear that people
plug their guitars into has become progressively more of an "equalizer" in
overall sound. You can plug (almost) any guitar into some of these hotrod
rigs and produce very interesting sounds. So... sound is a gray area and
subjective. Playability is certainly subjective. What weight of a guitar is
right for you? What size neck, what action etc. etc. It's all subjective.
But.... if you are talking about things like materials, craftsmanship,
and durability most guitars have found their rightful place in history and
are set in the food chain appropriately.
Having said all that... I think most of the current medium and higher priced
Schecter models are really good guitars for the money. But, if you play one
for 15 minutes and then pick up a GMP or a PRS... you will quickly understand
why they have different reputations and price points.

I was just about to say GMP. I have been recording with a couple of their models lately and I really love their sound...and sustain that never ends. They are both really heavy though, so those who bitch about Les Pauls wouldnt like them. But I'm young and strong so who cares!:)

Good to see a fellow GMP player out there. You don't see many because
they are so exspensive and limited in production, but I think they are
the "best" guitar I have ever played. But, like I said, that's subjective
to a point huh? LOL. Anyway... for those of you not familiar with GMP,
look into them if you get a chance. They rock.

Another Carvin. Ebony fingerboards!

Light, thanks for the nice words about them.

lpdeluxe, I don't know what you mean. Ebay prices for Carvins are about right, 75% of new or so, unless they're vintage, then they go up. Used Carvins are probably marked down in stores because most people don't know what they are. Plus, they're inexpensive to begin with.

OK, I'm wrong. Carvins are NOT underrated! I'm speaking as a satisfied Carvin owner, you understand. And, come to think of it, the guy who sold me my Les Paul Deluxe didn't need it any more because he had THREE Carvins. I withdraw my "underration."
