Ive been looking at Eastwoods lately on the net. Anyone ever play one of these?
do they sound good at all?

Any of the OLD Westones. British brand from the 1980s, built in Japan for the most part. I have a Prestige 150 which I picked up for peanuts. It's a beautiful translucent red finish, thru neck, someone swapped in some Gibson humbuckers which sound awesome. I also use a Thunder 1A active one which is ridiculously versatile.

Also - the Burns Marquee is the worst-named and best playing Strat-type guitar under £800 out there. It's got a unique sound and a very 'woody' tremolo, but real Strat quack out of phase and the best greenburst and gold hardware finish.

Mexican strats. They are good guitars and easy to upgrade. I have one, with custom shop pickups, and I love it.

The Mexicans are OK...But the Japanese Strats rule!Better than alot of the Americans by far..and relitively cheap!replace the P/U's and you got a great instr. :)

Do Basses Count?

In 1980 a bought a new BC Rich 4-string bass (I believe the model was called “The Wave”) with active pickups. I absolutely love the tones I can get out of this bass. It has a six-position tone switch with a couple of other tone knobs I usually don’t bother with. I haven’t seen very many of these basses around. The colour changes slightly from a blue to turquoise-like hue when you change the way the light strikes it. Awesome!

There was a time when BC Rich wasn’t low end.

I also have an Ephiphone Les Paul that I bought from Guitar Center in Boston used back in 1999 where the previous owner had changed the pickups. It's got a pretty hot tone.

Can I second two brands? I think I've got one of those. At least I have a Westone Pantera X275 that I paid $110 for - next to nothing, it's built by Matsumoku (like my Aria bass btw). If the Blade is a Rolls the Westone has more of a Corvette-feeling.... ;)
Well built - like the Blade it has a nice acoustic tone also. I don' really like the neck but it's nothing wrong with it - just a personal preference. Very nice pickups - this is one guitar I'd never change the originals on.

Sadly this one rarely gets a workout nowadays. Too many guitars, too little time... :)

Canadian Built

As far as acoustics go, I have a Norman 6-string with Fishman pickups that I adore.

That's the one. They're very collectable now and there are one or two very small fansites around on the web. Treasure it mate!

underrated

I think the mexican Fenders are pretty underrated. Particularly their reissue models. Those are some great guitars. People always say put new pickups in the Mexican standards but as far as I'm concerned put new pickups in the American standards. Those things sound like poop. Brittle, harsh & unflattering.

I also really like the Schecter S-1. That thing sounds like an SG but plays better & costs less than half as much. All mahogany body, set neck, grover tuners, tasteful Brian May shape, coil tap, bound neck, pearl/abalone inlays...holy crap! A/B one with an SG, seriously.

1960ish Airline 3-pickup white fiberglass

the one in the old montgomery wards catalog

Well, no guitar is more underrated that Deans...
Take a look at these :
http://www.deanguitars.com
...especially the 79 series... (and don't trust the pics on the main site. They are from a pre-production / first-production run, and theres no flametops on those pics. All 79's are flametops today)
They are very cheap compared to what else is out there, and they play great... I have an ML and it outplays every other guitar I own (including LP Standards, classics and other "High-End" stuff)
...and did I mention : They look GREAT!!!!!!!!

Ibanez Artists.

At least the "vintage" models. They started making reissues a few years ago and I haven't really got to compare the sound of the reissues to the originals. I know the reissues weigh much less than my "vintage" models.

I've got two of these puppies (both from the early 80s) and I cannot be happier-- and I didn't pay more than $400 for either of them. I don't even want a Les Paul since I got these guitars. Plus, I think the double cutaway looks cooler than the LP.

Solid mohagany body and very high build quality-- the factory shielding alone speaks to the quality (the internals are shielded VERY well). I'm not so sure I like the stock pickups, but I have replaced the pickups in every guitar I've owned so I guess I'm biased in that regard.

If you love the Les Paul tone and feel, you have to check out these guitars. There's about 15 of them on Ebay right now for less than $500.

Walmart has a nice kit.... comes with a small amp. $99. Supposed to be pretty sweet

My friend has one of the Ibanez "Law Suit" LP copies. That thing is pretty neato.

No one's mentioned Larrivee guitars yet. In their price range, I find them better than Taylors

I don't know how any guitar is "rated," but I'm always surprised that the Rickenbacker solidbodies, like the 610, 620 and Dakota, aren't more highly sought-after. I guess they get overshadowed by the ubiquitous 330 and 360, or else it's because everyone assumes that if you play a Ric you're trying to sound like the Byrds. For the price, these are phenomenal American-made guitars--the quality control that I've seen on these things is off the charts. Unique instruments with some uncommon features and unheard-of craftsmanship--yet I'll bet you won't see two people playing one of them in a year.

I'm a strong believer in cheap guitars. I bought the 3 I use onstage (different tunings) for a grand total of $330. They all play and sound great so I guess they would all be "underrated".

#1 is a Tele copy with the brand name "State of the Art". Other than these being imported from Asia in the 80's, I have no info on it. Nails a Tele sound to the point that I can't tell the difference. When the pots got scratchy, I replaced them with American stuff, but the pick-ups are original as far as I know. I keep this in drop-D tuning.

#2 is an "MD" brand (Music Drive). It looks kinda like some things made by Samick, but I don't know for sure where it was made. It's a cheap piece of cr*p with lousy tuners and a very light body, but a nice neck and the bridge humbucker pick-up sounds great. I keep this tuned down a full step.

#3 I'm not going to talk about. I don't want any competition on eBay if I want another one!

I try to take good care of my guitars, but the nice thing about these being so cheap is not having to worry if I back over one of them with the van!!
