Whats the best way to get started?

I always wanted to sing, but I never had the confidence to do so. Now I have taken a few vocal lessons and have improved my confidence a lot, but I don't really have any ways to learn more now. It doesn't help either that when I sang in chorus in high school they placed me in soprano 1, and really i'm a low alto, so any experience I had was wrong xD However with my vocal lessons I've found my natural range and learned a lot, but I've moved to a new area and with new expenses and everything I don't know if i'll have the funds to keep up with the lessons. I would love to start up a band, once I find the people, but is it better for me to make sure I have all my vocals in line or is that something that will come along with the band mates; having the music together and their input? I just feel like i'm going in a circle not knowing exactly what to do xD Help!

Do you play an instrument? If you do, it may be wise to do the solo route for a little bit, to get the nervousness out of the way. Start out with a few covers, slowly add originals. When you get your confidence up, then look into putting a band together.

Yeah, I think starting out acoustic is the best way. Especially if you lack confidence, it can be tough to sing in tune when there's a full band blaring in your ear. Singing with a band is almost a separate art, and it's probably better to first get comfortable singing in front of other people in the "best" circumstances (ie. where you can really hear yourself). Open mics are a good venue - expectations are low all around, so it's low pressure. Just get two songs under your belt and try them out.

Look for good musicians that are just starting out. If you have a good voice, you'll have no problem. Most bands realize that the thing that sells a band is the front. Maybe start out in an established band as a bg vocalist and work from there toward your goal. There are lots of paths to choose from. Know where you want to be at the end of the path; find somewhere to step onto the path; be prepared for a few switchbacks, curves and the occasional bear or snake in the middle of your path....

As far as your own writing, figure out some way of getting your song ideas on paper/mp3, whatever and just hold them until you're confident enough to get them completely out of your head into the world. Don't discard what you think might be a noob idea. Some of my best stuff I wrote 15 years before I used it.
