Fuck off Gidge....:) And please try not to explain to people what I meant in the future. I post what I mean, and don't need you putting words in my mouth.

whatever.....i think those with a sense of humor caught on with the "acquired taste" comment......or do you have the corner market on humor here too......

I'm not a pro either, and I also dig that this is homerecording.com, and not prorecordingassholes.com, though sometimes that's how it seems. It's actually a pretty useful forum, with some smart people, and good advice... usually.

Bottom line, if you don't subscribe to the theory that you need to spend a ton of money on gear to get nice sounds, Joemeek has a killer sound for the price.

Gidge, I'll take one of those VC3Q's off your hands...

... for 99$!!

If I went on a murder/suicide spree (well I guess you can't have a suicide spree ;) ), I think I'd rather have something other than a mic pre named after me - unless he actually did the killings with a pre. I can sort of imagine a bloody little green box.

I'd hope for a weapon of some type. Maybe a shotgun or chainsaw...heck, at least a steak knife or a sexual position.

I dunno ;)

well they had 4 left when i bought my 2 and i actually thought about getting 2 extra for profit....

anyway, im keeping both...the only other preamps i have are the DMP2's so i needed a little color(ie distortion/hiss)....

Gidge, we'll just be sure to keep our VC3Q's out of sonusman's
target range!

Gidge -

Personally I appreciate what you do around here. And I trust that opinions you state are based off of experience...it's crazy to think that someone would just make up stuff for 4,000 some odd posts. What kind of experience - doesn't really matter...tidbits here and there can still help out a lot.

But, I think you have to take anything ANYONE says on these forums with a grain of salt. A lot comes down to personal opinion...and there are so many opinions to consider.

Anyways, just my word of support for Gidge.

wow, i do have a lot of posts....

ok 4400 posts

about 1000 recommended Delta soundcards....

about 1000 recommended Marshall microphones.....

about 500 recommended Yamaha Pacifica guitars......

about 500 spamming Guitar Mania and MarcSeal.com .....

1000 various about RNC compressors, Behringer compressors, the sm57 and the Johnson J-Station and the Countryman DI box....

400 posts saying that i do masturbate alot....

seriously, i take some shit about supposedly not knowing anything and just mirroring what the pros are saying.....i do have lots of experience with bottom feeder gear because im a cheapskate......in the rare instance i recommend something i havent heard, that recommendation is passed on from a reliable source and i will note that i havent used it......

along the way of learningall this ive picked up lots of info....so i have no problem passing on what ive learned...like i said, i didnt invent the wheel but i can help someone build one.....

i think the only thing ive done different is actually take the time to answer questions that probably 100 other people here could have but passed on it because it wasnt a hot debatable issue and shoulda got posted in the Newbie section.....i think ive helped as many new guys get started out here as anyone else......

Gidge, hope you caught my apology on the NT1000 or C1 thread
regarding my attempts at humor. Have you tried out the VC3Q's
compressor yet?

i havent had a chance to play with these 2 new ones....but from what i remember the compressor on it was very decent..esp DI'ing a clean guitar or bass....on vocals it was ok...not quite as versatile as a standalone compressor but with vocals i try to get the vocal down with as little compression as possibe and wait until mixing to do anything drastic with plugins.......

hopefully in the next week or so ill be able to breath through my nose again so i can do some vocals....thats good news for me, bad news for you guys...damn, my singing sucks!.....

If sonusman is such a pro why does he hang out in a HOME recording forum. Maybe he is as fun to be with in real life and none of the Pros want to talk shop with him anymore.

i wont dig on Eds professionalism...he knows his shit.....and he can be a pretty nice guy, ive have chatted with him a few times (no cyber sex, no mateer what he says)....he has posted mp3s to prove how good he is...that isnt at issue.....he just cant see anyone actually liking the sound of a Joe Meek and a lowlife like me recommending it is definitely out of the question....so yes he does get BIG HEADED....but hes a good guy and knows his shit......he has that mixing post that has over 10,000 views to it...that is amazing....

Ahhhh, that's what I love about this forum :D

Ed is entitled to his opinions, as are others. If I rant about how many records were done on VC3's and VC3Q's, or the Grammy Winners that own and still use them, I probably would get bashed as a spammer, so I won't mention it, but here is what I will mention.

The mic preamplifier of the VC3 and the VC3Q is the same chip that 85% of all the mid to low end units use...the SSM2017. I won't challange anyone's ear, but the mic pre is pretty darn good. The compressor is excellent...yeah it has a sound, but it is intented to.

Compressors were not invented to perform any electronic protection. They were invented as an effect to change or color the sound, and that is what a Joemeek does. As for the VC3's enhancer, well...it is a misunderstood device. It is intended to fix dull tracks, not to be used to track with...its an exciter...a 2nd order harmonic generator with a sweep "Q". Its easy to make this thing sound bad, but use it the right way like to add some sizzle to a lifeless bass track, or to liven up a track where the guitar strings don't ring, or even a vocal track that has no detail. It is best used for the mix...not tracking, which is why I suggested it come off and the EQ be put on because it was hard for beginners to understand how to use it correctly.

As for the EQ on the VC3Q, it is a very straight forward 3 band fixed designed to color. It excels for vocal and guitar. The one thing about the Meek, and I won't call it British, but the Brit's, especially Joemeek use a weird metering setting, so that at 0DBV, the unity gain is not +4, but 0. What this means is most users tend to set the input until the meter hits the yellow LED and that's all she wrote, but when the 1st red LED is on, there is 26db of headroom left, so the front end really needs to be pushed, and pushed hard. You will hear distortion if you overdrive it. When you do this, the compressor, mic pre, and EQ seem to come to life and sound much better, so if anyone owns one...push the shit out of it.

Hey, I'm with Gidge here on this one. Just because Gidge suggests something he may not have used, does not discount his opinion of any unit he may formed by talking with other users of a specific product, and on HR, opinions are just that.

The VC3, VC3Q, and the new MQ3 at $199.99 in the stores is a great unit. It is not for everybody, but 25,000 users can't all be wrong. When you look at what is out there for $199.99...the Meek is a great deal, and seeing how several of you got them for $99.00 at GC...they just got better. In addition, those with 2 like you Gidge, use it for a two mix. Run a 1K tone into each channel to line them up, and set the output levels using a meter on a DAT or other device with a meter, and do a mix...the results are quite good.

P.S. Yes we distribute Joemeek, but I did not try to sell any :D

i dont think i really bashed you for spamming Alan...i have said it kinda discredits the product because youre not gonna say anything bad about what you sell so some people will put less credit on the good stuff you say about it....am i making any sense?...somebody stop me.....

the difference between you and Ed?..he isnt selling anything....thats it...you both are very knowledgable and very well respected here (by most)......

anyway, C1 = great mic .....Joe meek= great pres.....

no i dont own a c1 but ive heard it and its sweet......i havent heard the Joe Meeks i bought yet, but the ones i heard are awesome......i dont have to own a product to know if its good or not and i DEFINITELY dont have to set foot in a pro studio to recommend a HOMErecording product.....

man these pain pills are doing crazy things to my train of thought.....

Great explanation Alan! (and Gidge I hope you get well soon)

about 500 recommended Yamaha Pacifica guitars......

There's a kid with funny hair at work going to audition for Limp Bizkit.

Weapon of choice: Pacifica.

Nice explanation of the VC3/VC3Q, Mr.Hyatt. It says in the manual to push it (or I read it somewhere else)

nah Limp Bizkit fans dont know anything about GOOD guitar tone.....

Maybe it's my imagination, however, on the recent song by
John Mellenkamp, "A Beautiful Place", it sounds like they used a
Meek compressor as it has that "green" color to the sound!
Good production and good song by the way.
