What's my recording missing?

Hey, "finally someone gives me positive feedback" is a little out of line.
I translate that as "finally someone agrees with me".
You've had positive suggestions from EVERYBODY but you weren't happy with them because they didn't seem to agree with ouy.
Ido1957 said what had already been said with a spoon of sugar as his opening gambit: almost everyone has scommented that the tone wouldn't fit in a mix, several suggest some EQ changes. All of these are consistent. Ido has good people skills!
If you ask for opinions you need to a) suss out the work of thsoe making recommendations, b) check out their rep status (it exists for a reason), c) read with an open mind & d) TRY some of the suggestions before responding.

yeah ..... I'm bettin' that's not gonna happen.
He asked what was wrong with his recording and then seemed to get offended when everyone didn't jump up screaming it was awesome!
It's really not.

last time i recorded a blues jr it was about 2 inches off the grill with an md421. 421's are a bit darker sounding but similar and i got a very usable tone in the mix. You should still put your mic a little bit closer and set it to omni but if you really want a rich tone like that your going to have to carve a lot of low end out of the bass and the kick drum. this will lead to a weaker tone over all. Guitars are really supposed to dominate the mids in a mix. A bassey bass will almost always have more power in a mix than a bassey guitar. Feel free to experiment but the guitar really shouldn't be to present under 200 hz

Really, chill out. Im not offended because people dislike my recording. Im new at this and i know it is far from great. I know i have a lot to learn and i thought this would be a goob place to do so. Im mind open, im taking suggestions. I dont know if it would fit in a mix because ive never tried it, but i will take your advice.

All im trying to do is descrive the kind of sound im going for so you guys can give some suggestions. I dont want a metallica sound with an sm half an inch apart from the grill, thats it. That doesnt mean i want everybody to think my recording is awesome, that just means i would want someone to point me the way to get where i want.

Bottom line: i know what i want but i dont know how to get it, thats why im here.

Peace

Oh and by finally someone gives some positive feedback i was trying to say someone finally understood what im going for. :) thats all

if you want a really powerful guitar sound double tracking might be the way to go.

Yeah, i had been thinking about that. Today ill try different techniques and hope i can finally nail it :D ill try to capture more high end so it is more detailed and fits better in a mix but without loosing some of its muddyness, which is what i want for this song.

Ill upload my results so you guys can give me some feedback

After a couple of weeks experimenting with different mics, mic positions, and amp settings I finally got closer to the guitar tone I was looking for.

The result was better than my previous tries, but still I feel like its missing something. I havent quite developed an ear for this, I guess it takes practice and time. I was able to get the raw and crunchy sound I was looking for but still something is missing, I just dont know what.

I was hoping you guys could give me some feedback and tell me whats missing in that tone and how could I achieve that.

Thanks a lot!

Oh and dont mind the crappy playing

I listened to your second try Chico. I mean this in the nicest way possible but in my ever so humble opinion, it's srtill too dark sounding. And I LIKE darker, thicker guitar sounds. I think you'd have a hard time getting a guitar sound like that to sit in a mix. The proof though will be in the pudding so track yourself a tune and start hammering your tracks into a mix. That's really the measure of how the sound is working.

Thanks Track Rat, I apreciate your feedback. Yeah, I think it wont fit very well in a mix with bass and drums. What would you suggest to get a sound with more highs but still keep the dirt and darkness in the sound?

Yes, I posted the links in some of the first posts.

Here is the first try FirstTry by Chico Percebe on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

The second one is this one, after I tried a couple of the advices I got here SecondTry by Chico Percebe on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

Ill hear your track and give some feedback :D
Thanks!
The guitar is a bit muddy. What is your soundcard? Might be a low budget soundcard making it sound muddy, or maybe mic placement and/or amp settings.

Try boosting the mids in the amp, and trying different pickup settings, and moving the mic about the speaker.

Not a bad effort!

If I were you, I'd try to get some basic backing tracks so you could experiment with your tone shaping and try to see for yourself what will fit and won't fit.

Im using a TASCAM us144 audio interface. Ill try to record a sample today with different amp settings and mic positions. I think the backing track idea is pretty good, Ill try that! Will be posting results here soon

Here are my results from yesterdays session. There is no eq or compression, I want to get the right recording first.

One of the tracks is double tracked, the other isnt. Tell me what you think about them

I think the sound is more detailed, with more highs. But I think I lost some of the dirt, which I liked from previous recordings. Perhaps these would work better on a mix

Now you're getting a lot closer to something you can use.

I think I am (: Which one did you like the most? Double tracked or single track?

You want to tune your guitar with a digital tuner before recording. If you did, then it is still out of tune, so you need to adjust the truss rod and the bridge to ensure the intonation is perfect. I would suggest getting your local music shop to do this for you if you are not sure what to do. Well worth it to have a perfectly in tune guitar no matter what fret you are on.

The double tracked sounds the same as the single tracked. :)

Much cleaner tone you have now! Not very gritty, but I would choose nice over dirty if you cannot get a happy medium.

Keep at it!
