Gentlemen (and ladies, if there are any in this forum):

I need to get my studio lexicon straight.

Is there a difference between a studio and a project studio, and if so, what is that difference? Also, is there a name (other than "one-room studio") for a studio in which recording and mixing (and everything else, for that matter) is done in the same room?

The industry typically uses "Pro Studio" to describe a multi-room facility where there is at least a live room and a console room. A project studio typically is much smaller, has less features, and often one room.

Personally, I prefer other definitions. To me, a true "pro" studio is involved in more of the recording process from start to finish. Planning, recording, mixing, mastering, glass master, and possibly duplication. In this context, a project studio would more than likely focus on recording and mixing, sending their final product out to a mastering house.

Hell, I guess I got me one of them project studios then.

Sometimes I feel I'm stretching the truth by calling my recording space a studio, but each purchase makes me less suspicious of my claims. :D

Heh-heh, its just language, and its not formed in stone what you call your studio. I certainly wouldn't advertise my home studio, dispite the gear, as a full fledged recording studio, even though I do have the equipment and skillsets to do planning, recording, mixing, mastering, etc.

Yeah. That's the feeling I've been having, too, which is what made me post the question in the first place. So can I safely assume that nobody here is likely to flame me (much) if I call my little one-room setup a "studio"? It still feels kind of pretentious to do so, but I don't know what else to call it. And considering that I used to record in a corner of the bedroom, I'm very grateful to now have a room dedicated to music.

Why, a "studio apartment" is one room with a toilet bolted in the corner....

Sorry but I'm a little slow. Did you mean I have to have a toilet bolted in the corner to call my garage a studio? Because I'm telling man, I can get one tomorrow if need be. :D

I do plan on making some changes to the space to make it more of a studio. Heck, I allready have carpet.
