C'mon guys I know we all have one.. What the most valuable possession that you own. Whether it be monetary value or sentimental.. I wanna hear it!!

I think computers and interfaces should be ruled out only because of necessity. Unless of course, a computer and interface is all one has.

So aside from the most used and needed equipment, the equipment that I've gotten the most use out of would be my DBX 160A.

Love my Aether monitors. That was a big impact, changed things. Nice to have that end settled, done. :)

And guitars; good ol' hacked! 355', and ok, dad's old Gibson acoustic that survived the south pacific and Peal. Yee-ah. That's in there :guitar:

From 'The most extravagant for humble home studio dept'.. definitely Empirical Labs 'Mike-e.
..Side note. Found so much fun with the Chameleon pre's, one of their eq's lives patched in line with mike'e.... :)

Can't even work without my monitors (well technically, I can't do any work without the power supply either). I could change every piece of gear in the racks and still get stuff done as long as the monitors (Tyler Acoustics Decade series D1's) are there...

Some days it's a preamp...other days it one of my guitars...the again sometimes it's mic or one of my compressors...

...I guess I'm just fickle. :)

The 16 bass traps I built. Only because I've never been handy at all, so I was quite proud of myself when I got them done and done well.

They've improved the sound in my room more than any piece of gear could have done......and they look cool, too.

Tied for first place would be the .....

Empirical Labs *Fatso* and Eventide *Eclipse*.

Ooo is Eclipse fun?
:)
Hey Rami, that's a nice feeling ain't it.

You don't need either. and I don't see why having those and using them would make them less of your pride and joy either. If anything, it would make them more important.
I especially love my computer. My bass amp is probably my fav piece after it though. =P My computer can do everything I need and want it to. My bass amp really does only one thing, but it sounds gorgeous. XD

My ROOM..equipment comes and goes.:) And if you think about it..it IS your most important piece of equipment..after all, ever listen to sound INSIDE of your gear?

You certainly need them for that type of setup. I don't use a multi-track or tape, so that's why I didn't mention the two. The reason I thought the two should be ruled out was because my computer can most likely do the same thing yours can. Unless you have a Mac :D

And before someone says, well my compressor can do the same thing your compressor can, I'd just like to say that that is completely different. The compressors can have different tonal characteristics, different functions (slow attack vs. fast, etc.). With a computer, all you are doing is arming the tracks and recording in your DAW... The same thing my computer does. (Note I didn't say we should rule out DAW's.)

Haha. Same here. My computer is needed for what I do. Just not for everyone. and my computer can do everything a Mac can do, though no, it is not one. =P You can see in my sig what I have in it. Nothing over the top, but does wonders still.

As you mention DAWs though, I suppose I really have to hand it to those and a lot of the plugins I use for recording specifically then. I do love Studio One, and Reaper especially. Reaper for the ease to do absolutely anything with, and Studio One for the more pro layout and more general usage.

it's a tough one but probably my Taylor Big Baby with a Fishman Rare Earth Blend installed. Although i've played nicer sounding acoustics i've not played anything as comfortable. the only this that was close was a friends 60's gibson mahogany acoustic (christ knows what the model was!) which i think must've been 3/4 size. it was beaten, worn, a sounded pretty awful, but it felt amazing to play :)

Definitely. Especially when you doubt yourself before starting, and you know that anyone that knows you would bet against you ever getting it done. :D

I can't decide. Everything I have is necessary and a valuable tool in my arsenal. I've paid careful attention to not buying stuff I don't want or need. I have several items that are less important than others, but not one that just stands out as my pride and joy.

I was gonna say something smart like that, but then Greg went and said it better. It's exactly how I feel, except for the part about not buying stuff I don't want or need. I wanted everything I bought (why?), but I certainly didn't need it. And I bought a bunch of stuff anyway.

I have been so swamped with non-recording life--work, travel, divorce (my daughter, not me), cancer (my wife and my dad, not me)--that I have done little to nothing in terms of recording in the past 18 months. And right after I finished building a bitchin' studio! Dohhh!

Anyway, as I ease back into it, I'm amazed at how much I DON'T need so much of what I had bought for the studio. On a regular basis, I use 10% of my guitars, 10% of my mics (maybe less!) and 10% of my rack gear. The moral of that part of the story for you "young'ns" is to lust more for the song, and less for the gear!

But to get back to the question at hand: unlike Greg, I have a bunch of stuff that I don't need (emulate Greg on this one, folks!), but just like Greg, I can't pick any one thing.

Sorry for the long-ass non-answer...

A 'puter and interface isn't a neccessity since I don't use one for recording or listening to music. In fact, about the only thing I use one for is the 'net.

As for most precious piece 'o' gear .......... my custom Stinnett guitar without a doubt.
It's the only irreplacable bit I own. Everything else can be bought again but this is the only one there is.

As much as I'd like to say my ears......that's simply not the case. My ears are shot. The truth is....it doesn't matter how good your equipment is or how much that equipment is worth monentarily unless you have the ears.

Congrats, Rami! 16 bass traps?!?!?! You record in a geodome? (wink)
