what to do?

i'm about to have a 1/2" ampex 4 track upon me.. i usually record with cakewalk sonar, but for the slightly distorted/compressed effect, want to record only the bass drum, snare, and overhead mics through this 4 track and then into the computer at the same time as the other drum tracks going right in.. i'm aware of the delay that will be there and plan on fixing it in sonar since it will be the same for the kik, sn, and overheads.. i'm assuming this has been done before
but i want to know if anyone has tried anything like this and if it worked out ok matching things back up.. i mean the repro head is the same distance from the record head for all tracks and is most likely an easy value to delay something by.. like 1/2 second.. i know it depends on what speed i run the tape as well, but i'm just asking about the theory of lining them up well... what choo think?

If you want to do it this way, and you got enough inputs into sonar, record off of the repro heads into sonar WHILE you are recording.

otherwise, the next time you play the tape, it will be longer or shorter total time than when you recorded it, leading to phase problems.

yeah.. i didn't want to do it twice because of that reason! i just wanted it right of the repro head.. thanks!!!!
