Yeah that too.....btw, I wasn't bustin anyone's chops about the pissin match, I just didn't want to see another one break out. I also think that memory card thing is a valid point.....for someone who would be in your position. I personally don't need to upgrade for what I do, I'm still using the stock issue card. Honestly, the VF80 is more complex I think.....hell it took me long enough to figure this MR8 out! Used to be, pushin buttons meant you were puttin the ol Dodge in reverse!

To say Sir George Martin is a genius is an excercise in understatement. To add to that he is a true gentleman. He has self-effacingly stated over the years that his genius was in letting the Beatles have their head once they learned their way around a studio.
The Beatles and Sir George were also served by some of the best engineering talent in the world: Norman Smith, Geoff Emerick, and Alan Parsons.
Norman Smith went on to produce Pink Floyd. Parsons went on to become a recording artist/producer in his own right with the Alan Parsons Project.
That also points to a point I've been trying to make in many of my posts on this forum. That is isn't so much the equipment as knowing how to achieve the end result. It isn't the equipment that makes the music better--it's what is in our hearts and hands and heads. The equipment is just a medium or tool to achieve the end of communicating what is in our hearts and our heads.

The bottom line is that Fostex has done something none of the other multitrack equipment manufacturers have done: put 8-track digital multitrack capability in the hands of consumers. Everytime the others do something. Fostex has found a way to raise the bar. When the others came out with 4-track portable recorders with lots of bells and whistles in terms of FX, drum patterns or whatever, Fostex skipped the bells and whistles and went for increasing the number of available tracks. While the others went for digital compression to achieve recording length, Fostex opted for uncompressed digital processing, which yields a superior sound quality. And all for less than the other units charge. No phantom power on the Fostex? Boss, Zoom, Korg and Tascam don't have it on theirs either. Except for the Boss, which has 1, the other brands don't even have XLR inputs.
But I digress because this is stating the obvious and I'm preaching to the choir.

Let's keep the those machines going and posting the results.

Yep, I wouldn't mind hearin a little UKE myself! And Preachin to the choir aint so bad.....we're sort of an isolated lot! I couldn't agree more with your post. I just keep pluggin along, tryin to get better. Still got a world of stuff to learn.

bd you meant cd not hd (couldn't resist that ) The CD writer over here is another £200 which is just a plain stupid price. Give it a few months and they'll drop by at least a half.

Going through the old threads Garry and found this. Shame it didn't come true as the price of the burner is putting me off for now. Is there any other burners that may be compatiable which don't cost silly money?

I'm working on this blues in A, actually, the ukulele seems like a perfect instrument for the blues. I've got "Nobody knows you (when you're down and out)" worked out, and of course, there is that St. James Infirmary I did last winter. "I'd love to change the world", and "House of the rising sun" work very well on it too. I'm also working on Mickey and Sylvia's "Love is strange", the intro is killer on the uke.

the CD burner for the VF80 is nearly $1000 AUD (thats a hell of a lot more than 200 quid I can assure you).

Luckily, the Aus dollar is rising against the USD so the base price of the VF80 and other units is starting to drop.

Well, I was wrong back in March; CD writer price has risen, not fallen I believe there is no other compatible burner; I think Plextor used to have one but have ceased production. Not sure, might be worth checking www.vf16.com.

I've come to a crossroads....after 2 weeks of playing with my mr-8 Ive come to the conclusion that Ive got to do somthing in order to have more tracks. My computer has a multitracking program (magix) that i guess i dont give enough credit to but my computer just doesnt have the nuts to handle 8 tracks with effects. I have tried the n-track free version and really do like it but im still not sure i will be able to handle the load. I have to options....

1. Buy n-track for $45 and hope my computer can handle it

2. Buy the Sandisk 512 CF card form amazon.com for $112 and do most of my recording and effects on the mr-8

The third approach is a hybrid using both an MR-8 unit and a PC. It can do 8 digital tracks and stores the result on an internal compact flash card. What really makes this work is a software utility that Fostex provides that allows you to move individual recorded tracks to the PC. Then you can record more tracks on the Fostex and use something like PowerTracks on the PC to mix the result. You effectively end up with a 48 track digital recorder for about $350.

I thought I had been hard done by when I paid £999 for a vf160 complete with burner about 18 months ago. Maybe that wasn't such a bad price for then.

I have noticed that whatever the dollar-pound exchange rate we seem to have to pay in £ what the Americans pay in $, which can't be right.

Not that i regret buying the vf160, it is a superb machine, but when i see people in this US saying the pick them up for $1000 (or less on ebay) it makes me mad!

Garry, the VF80 is still being advertised over here at $200 more than the MR8, although some people claim to be able to get the VF80 a lot cheaper. I haven't seen it myself, but then I haven't actually been looking too hard either.
