what to buy for acoustic guitar?

The best guitar for $200 doesn't mean that it will be a good guitar
at all. If you are really serious about playing you need to get a guitar
that will sound good to you and will make you want to pick it up and
play. Go to a shop that has a lot of used guitars and play them. It is
sound that should be buying, not looks. Another consideration should
be what you will have left when you want to upgrade. A good used
Gibson, even a low end one will most likely be worth all that you pay
for it when you are ready to move up. A $200 dollar guitar might be
worth $75 if your lucky. Treat it as an investment. Skip the frills &
glitter, listen & feel!!!

As I may or may not agree with some of the above posts, there's a little bit of cold hard facts that some may need to look at:

1. A beginning guitarist can not 'typically' determine some of the subtle tonal differences between a crap guitar, and a crappier guitar. If you were to ask me to pick out a guitar when I first started, I'd probably go with which ever one had a flame job painted on it.

2. I have found that most guitars even around $100 are suspect and usually fail quickly. I don't know why, considering the quality and diversity of other products that $100 bucks can get you in chinese merchandise. I would start looking at the $200 and up range. Period.

3. I have always been impressed with Seagulls. They look good, sound good, and hold up to abuses well.

Everytime I see a thread like this where someone is desperately trying to find the best bang for the buck, I just have to bring up Carvin. If you save up a bit more, you could snag one of their Cobalt series guitars which blow away just about anything mentioned here so far. They rival guitars that cost twice as much and even more. They are cheap because they are factory direct, not because they skimp on quality. The Carvin Cobalt C250 is $299 right now and they have a few others that are only about 30 or 40 bucks more. If you really searched around, you might be able to find one used.

Yamaha

I have played all the name brand acoustics in that price range and the Yamaha's consistently played and sounded the best IMO...
