...jeez...and with all this speculation and ceremony (the seller's probably wondering why he got so many "hits" on this auction site) the damn thing's barely fetching $20!...shite...the 6072 tube by itself should get more than that...

The6072 is a 12ay7 preamp This box looks like its got a 3 mics input with passive mixer Not sure what the input switch does.. It has a preamp gain and an ouput gain...

Looks like an attempt to convert the innards of an old style pa into a guitar preamp. That'd be my guess.

IS THAT POINT-TO-POINT WIRING?!?!

He'll probably get it for 25 bucks and it'll come in the mail. He'll open it up to really look at the guts and written inside in Sharpie will be:

Final Project/Freshman Electronics
Howard Alexander Dumble

Cripes.

2 knobs remind me of tune and load on an old rf amp and you use the meter for the right combination, but there's no rf coils or chokes in there but the label says 1/2 wave trans, portable for some reason, maybe test gear or audio tone....

What would you expect? I'm guessing this, uh, time machine, was never mass produced. It would be worth $30 bucks or so just to play with and see if it can be brought to working order. Who knows, maybe it sounds cool after some components are replaced.

I hope that you would extend what philosophers call the 'principle of charity', and realize that I was merely joking.

Perhaps my excessive excitement regarding even rudimentary P2P wiring would have been more recognizable as satire if I had included a "".

My bad.

Hard to get those! You gotta get past all the sleestak and then the alisaurus. Holly always trips and you have to run back for her...

It's a pain!

...maybe Philgood, Flatpicker, or any of the other DIY'ers on this site can give an educated guess as to what the hell this thing is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5862389910&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1

When I was but a lad, I worked at an AM radio station as a Dj (back in the '70's when we had 7" plastic records and big ass turntables etc).

I used to do remotes from A&W and other remote locations. the engineer who came with me used to plug the rig (turntables, console etc.) into the phone lines and dial up the station who would patch it all into the transmitter.

The box he used looked something like this one. It was a pre-amp that carried the mix over the phone lines to the station and then to the transmitter.

The VU meter has an opbvious function and the "distortion" on the guitar ,must have been simply an overdrive of the pre-amp.

That's my guess. I could be wrong.
