I struggled with this same decision. I decided to go with the VS-2480. It has recording in both compressed and uncompressed mode. compressed at 24/96 or uncompressed at 24/44.1 with a track count of 16.
The data compression was a serious concern of mine. The more I learned about it the less concerned I became. In fact, I've done all my recording in compressed mode.
Interestingly many that are using these machines professionally actually "prefer" the sound of the compressed mode.
Check out this guys studio, he uses exclusively the VS machines. He has a 2480 and two 1680's linked up in this photo.

I questioned him about this, and he told me he uses compressed mode exclusively.
