Yeah I would try and give you advice.. but I don't know what to say... I got like 55 replies in 2 days.... (although half were responds by me...) still that makes about 30 replies....

I don't know.... maybe it's because im better looking than you???

That still doesn't say much. ;)

Sounds good, except maybe the intro. I'm not sure about that guitar that is playing the sustained part. Specifically, it sometimes hit a note that didn't quite agree with the chord being played by the rhythm part. Like, sometimes you played a note or two to transition between phrases, and that note wouldn't sound quite right until the rhythm guitar changed chords. Other than that, cool.

Brian,

I hear what your saying, thanks for the comments. As far as the performance, I wouldn't want to re-play it because whenever I do that, it's usually worse. I got so used to hearing it, it grew on me.
It was a bit of a spontanious thing that I tried to capture as it went down. I'll just make it up on the next song. I have a new one almost done, and it has gross misuse of a whammy pedal. I did better on the solos for the new one too. Thanks to Waldo and no where radio, I can get it here the second it's done. (not that I'll assume you want to hear it)

thx for taking the time.

louder vocals at the beginning definately....

style - generally...alternative.

I didn't read any previous comments...

I really like portions of this, but it's all sort of just stuck together with elmer's glue. The changes really need to be solidified so that this'll sound like one coherent number.

I really like the ultra-sustained guitar sound that solos through much of the tune...and the talk box was real cool. Some of the string sounds worked even if they are very synthy.

I like the mellower parts of the song quite a bit. There are some good vocal melodies in there and the guitars work well.

You said to be brutal...I don't like the heavy guitar section. The guitars sound very....mullet...hairy....leather pants....maybe it's the palm muting or something. I do like the vocal line during the heavy section though, it's almost kind of ozzy-like (the good ozzy not the creepy fat old ozzy).

I didn't like the vocal line in the intro for some reason. I can't be specific, but perhaps it was too monotonous hinting at melodramatic, which is probably what you were going for but it just didn't ring true for me.

I really like some of the vocals during the other mellow portions of the song though. Like the part at ~2:40 - 3:20....that's some really really nice shit, because it sounds real in the context of the song. Very well done. "I'm gonna save my change and keep it in my pocket...when I get enough of that I'll take it to the tropics." I like that line.

The mix was pretty good overall. Nothing stood out too much and nothing was buried too much, except perhaps the vocals here and there. Very listenable. You're probably at a point where better equipment would make a whole lot of difference.

Good work!

Slackmaster,

Hey thanks for taking the time. You know how much I like your stuff, so I really appreciate your ears. Your one of the few people able to make out the lyrics. You said the intro "didn't ring true,"
I hope you mean because the vocals were bad, because I can tell ya, the singer IS truly miserable and even if the vocals are bad, it came from a genuine self sickened place. :) I should have made that a place where someone else sang it.

Thanks for the comments about the lyrics, I'm glad you found something cool about it and that you think that I'm ready for better equipment. I just bought what I have last year:( I'm thinking about investing in a decent pre and sending EVERYTHING through it. I thought it was just for mic's, but I got some tips from Blue Bear, and he said that it's better for just about everything. I'm going to check out your website some more and get some ideas about what your using.

Thx for keeping it real

BTW your song "MONDAY", gets played for people here. I use it to know how crappy my stuff sounds in comparison, and it's just a dam fine tune, period.

Thanks

P.S. IMOP, I believe that OZZY should be getting the recognition that ELVIS does. OZZY started it all for me and many great bands I love. We have heard it before, but I must repeat it again,
OZZY RULES just for the Black Sabbath stuff alone, then add "Blizzard" and "Diary", and what do you have, a version of ELVIS that I can relate to. :)

hey mixmkr,
if you see this, I put something on the page for you to check out. It's under 2 minutes and it's the first thing on the No Whereradio page. Look at my mugshot in the bio for a laugh too. You might not even see this though, so I'm probably talking to myself.

Ok I'm listening again on my monitors at home...

I still think the mix is pretty good. It could definately be improved upon though. What kind of system are you monitoring on?

The comment I made about the vocals in the beginning...I should really take it back because it's very subjective...I guess I just meant that while the rest of the tune sounded like you were really singing quite naturally, the begining section sounded kind of forced. Maybe that's just me though.

Thank you very much for the compliments BTW. I'm just an amature at this game and it's nice to hear somebody say that they like something I've done!

What style is it? Don't know but I'd shop it to a modern dance theatre company, maybe your local colleges.

Slackmaster,

Thanks for weighing in bro, it is greatly appreciated. I don't mind at all someone not liking my singing, I just thought you meant that the singer was pretending to be miserable or something. I misunderstood. That vocal thing was straight up "pain," and I guess that's why the "notes" took a back seat to the emotion. I really have to work on that, but your honesty is truly appreciated.

As far as the monitoring, I mainly use Event 20/20's (passive) hooked up to a "consumer" reciever. I also reference through consumer speakers in a different room, (JBL bookshelf, mounted on the wall and hooked up to a 12" Cerwin subwoofer) and I'll usually waste a few c.d.'s on test mixes that I check on my computer speakers. (Altec Lansing's with a subwoofer.) Any tips are appreciated. If you want a whole run down on everything I have, I'll tell you.

You have any new tunes? I'd love to hear them because I really enjoy the others.

Thanks again...

hey philboyd

Thanks philboyd. It's nice to hear from a fellow 788 user. I posted this tune here without specifying it was done on a portastudio because I wanted to give it a fair shot. I truly appreciate your comments, but I think you listened to the wrong song. On this thread I was aking about "first passing" which is more guitar orientated. I appreciate you taking the time at all though, AND people here should know that you have probably achieved some of the best quality recordings I have ever heard done on a 788 potastudio. Great acoustic songs if anyone is reading this.

thank you again for taking the time

BTW, I don't know if you have already, but check out Nowhereradio, it's a lot better than "the other guy" ;)

thx again

you've got that song going on. I'm impressed, especially with the rock section. You just need to work on the mix. Its quite veiled.
Nice reverb on the solo guitar.

Cyan,

Thanks bro, much appreciated. "veiled" is a good word.
If you have any tips, let me know.

thx

oh...I meant to tell you last night...Nice ebow, dude.

and..your classical one.....doesn't that have some familiar parts in it?;) Both, very nice however....you put my faith back in the ebow, after the other version I commented on negatively.

you probably won't believe this, but that's why I put it up.
I read that "review." :)

BTW, I wrote to the moderator and asked him to delete that other thread........................ he did.

well, of course I believe it...that's why I felt you pointed it out to me.

and how am I supposed to play that other song to my 4th graders now:eek:

ah....slept on a mix, eh??....sounded different in the morning:rolleyes:
Sabb....you crack me up.........

I really like the changes. The acoustic picking parts are great, very smooth sounding acoustic.

Grain of salt thoughts,

-Overall the vocals are too low. You have a good voice, bring it out a bit.
- Kick could stand out better.
- The outro part (4:43), would be cool if you harmonized a bit there on the guitars, not mental like the Scorpians or anything, just a touch.
- The heavy guitars are a bit cloudy sounding. Doubled but not defined, if you have room to pan them either both further apart or do some effecting (reverb and or short delays) to one of them. Something, to break them apart.
-The toms jump out here and there.

I like a lot of the sounds you got going on in this, the song is varied and interesting. Good stuff, enjoyed the tune.

Emeric,

I appreciate you offering that advice. You have serious sound on your stuff, as well as good tunes, so it's appreciated.

The intro nylon string guitar sound is a JV 1010. As far as the singing, I really have a hard time mixing my own voice, because it's getting tougher for me to judge what sounds good. I've been hearing that they should come up so I'll give it a try. I'll also try to pan the heavier guitar parts more. The whole reason I put this song up here is because with all the time I put into recording it, I want it to sound better than average. (average portastudio owner that is.) I know that it does not now, but I'm trying to talk to all the people whom I've come to respect through there music. There are a few here, and I have let them now that I appreciate there insight. My gear is all "small time" I'm sure, in comparison to the peoples here, but i think with some fine tips like you just gave, I can make a recording that will actually make my speakers sound good.

Thanks again
