If anyone has the time, I would very much appreciate the answer to these 2 questions, and anything BAD or good about any part of this song.

I would say that I will listen to others and offer opinions of there music, but I listen to just about everything around here anyway.

Is this mix finished,? and what style of music does this fall under?

Thanks for taking the time if you did.

The song is called "first passing" and it's here,

Thanks

EDIT----------------please be as brutal as humanly possible.---------

Nice track,

Here comes the comments -->

I really dug the talk box bridge section and the wierd string instruments, it fits at times then it doesnt though. After the talk box part when the guitars come in, something sounds like it doesnt match. Groove or the progession or something like that.

I like the intro, the vocals need to be higher though. Good guitar work. What are you using for sustain?

Kick might want to get a little boost. It has that 'flappin in the wind' thump, which im not too keen on but thats a personal thing. I like in your face kicks.

Genre - Ozzie introduces himself to a flute......you asked......

Mixing sounded good to me also.

Good job.

sondriven,

Thanks for taking the time. That's an EBOW, and the "talk box" is a "BOSS Dynamic Wah." I tried to make the vocals blend, but maybe I made them too low. I didn t want them to be too loud. I want to put this to rest, but I'm still not sure.
Thanks.

I like your stuff. You never know what to expect when listening to it. Now, the string stuff doesn't really fit there that well, IMO. The drums sound a little too programmed at times. This song sounds a bit unfinished, since there's all kinds of stuff in it. Weird one, for sure, but could do some reworking in the arrangements. But, it's not bad. There's great stuff in there, but I don't know if they all belong in this same song, if you know what I mean.

b sabbath...simple incredible. I love the intro, I love the ebow, I love the pwr. gtrs... I love the change to the cello, good note choice too. this song is great, because it keeps evolving, and it all seems to continue on. I this case the song form of; A, B, C, D, a, b.. etc...works. I can almost hear the gtr "words". then the dbl stop violens. Well...you do go back to the pwr gtrs and the bckwrds leads...but, it holds the song together. Cranky1 suggests that there are alot of different (possibly unconnected) parts going on, that might be split amongst several songs.....I disagree. I like something away from the simple AABA form you always hear. I gotta listen to this CRANKED in the morning...FOR SURE. Even thought the blood is running out of my ears from underneath the headphones, I NEED some speaker air to hear this properly.

one negative....turn your vocals up, you silly gtr player ;)

one negative (part b)....watch the very, very final end note on the fade. A tad more gradual is my preference....which makes this NOT a finished mix, 'cept for that...when I listen over the speaks, I'll make the "final mix" judgement.

This is what I felt after listening to it once, so it's more of a first impression. It could be, that when I listen to it more, my impression will change. But the arrangements could use a few good bridge sections that would make the different parts connect more. I know I have also made these kind of songs, which have these really radical changes, which isn't always a bad thing, but it flows a bit better, if there's some kind of connection between the parts. Not always, though.

I'm sorry, if this sounds like I don't like the song. I really do like it. It's just that you wanted us to be brutal, so I'm trying :) Also, you asked, if this mix is finished. Well, not quite finished, but I don't know what to improve, right now.

I completely understand what you're saying, crankster. b sabbath gave us a good one, though...eh??

yeah...you gotta give us a couple days to "mull it over' if you're gonna ask us important questions like if the mix is finished or not....;)

CrankyOne,

Yeah, it jumps all over. I'm very confused because I listen to so many different kinds of music and it evolves strange sometimes. That's why I'm glad to have a place to put it up and get HONEST opinions from people. The drums were me playing pads. Thanks for taking the time. I still don't know what type of music to call this, as I look for local musicians to jam with. (Be talking soon about "TYRANT")

mixmkr,

thanks man.... the guitar was tuned to drop B flat. As far as the notes, I dont read music so it's always an accident when it's finished. Maybe that's why things go all over the place. It seems my tunes are as confused as I am. I'd Like to get a halfway decent C.D. made one day, so I want to get as much input about the mix as possible, fix it, and move on to the next one. Trying to finish a C.D. before I go deaf........my ears already ring.

Thanks.

--EDIT---- by the time I finished writing this, there were new posts from both of you, that was pretty cool. Thanks again gentlemen.

Funny..........does that mean your answer to my question is metal?
I ask because I'm looking for local musicians to jam with, and I don't know what "genre" to consider this stuff.

Thanks.

mmmmmmmmmm...........What would OZZY do? ;)

Metal with orchestra, but not in a Metallica way.

I like the way the music weaves in and out.

Gentle.........Rock!........soothing.......Kick you in the Head!......make me feel mellow and layed back.....Smack your face OFF!!!

I listened to another tune of yours but forgot the name. Kinda had the new beat to it with heavy guitars coming in. I like that tune too.

"What would OZZY do?"

.....drink a beer or 20....

Well, you asked a two part question so here goes.

1> Upon listening to this a few times, I'd call it metal for the most part.

2> The vocals were the only thing I felt were fighting the mix to be heard a little. I don't know if it's because they weren't mixed loud enough, or if it's the doubling you did vocal wise that's making the lyrics blurry and hard to understand in some places..
I like Alice In Chanis vocal doubling where every vowel is doubled perfectly in time. Again, i can't really hear the vocals too well on this so i don't know if that's the case here.

sondriven,

thanks for the comments. I like old Metallica but I'm not into there newer stuff. So far it's looking like the mix isn't done AND the genre is Metal.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm I almost don't feel right calling it METAL because to me, it's not heavy enough. When I see something labeled "Metal," I expect it to have more bite than this. I'm looking for local musicians, and if I said, come join my "METAL" band, and then they hear this song, I'll probably get laughed at.........

Maybe I'll get a few more thoughts before I give up on this song completely. I'm hearing the vox should come up but I'm not too into my voice.......................I dont know.

Thanks for taking the time.

Ace2000,

Thanks for the comments. I'm thinking, I don't know anymore.
Vocals too low, and you'd put this in the Metal category....hmmm
Interesting. Thanks again.

i forgot, good guitar solos. dump the strings and the rest of that crap.

Sabbath

I didn't read any of the posts above, so I wouldn't be "tainted"

I love the concept of this song...

I would like to hear "Crisper" eq'ed vocals, and a punchier bass drum... other than that, don't change a thing...

Style is, pretty much a modern Sabbath... Funny how your username corresponds with that *LOL*

Good Work...

Joe

mr.wilson, thanks for the input.

vox,

Thanks a lot. Your right about the vocals. It seems this may not be the final mix after all. I guess I pretty much got the answer to one of my questions. Thanks for the comments. I'm having trouble mixing the vocals and I'm afraid to E.Q. it to death. I try to use as little e.q. as possible because I've killed tracks already.

Who knows................... Thanks.

later.

Maybe if someone could give me specific frequencies that I could cut and boost to help it? Could that help it?

Should I just let this thread die and shut up?............ probably.

try a 50 dB cut at 1000hz with a wide 10 octave bell shape....or...a lo pass filter around 25hz....OR...a hi pass...say around 56K.....

But for me bsabb...you can give me a happy face curve on the 31 band, if you like;)

Yeah, I almost forgot that. Almost. I can't wait to hear from our project :) Keep me updated on that one. :)
