What should I put between my mixer and my computer?

Hmmm...re-reading the original post, I guess one of the things we don't know about the OP is whether he has a Mac or a Windows machine. Unless things have changed since I last looked, Apogee is Mac only.

I understand that is the case as well.

Re noise: THAT at least is measurable! In the case of my KA6 the record/play noise is at -101dBFS which makes it academic since no analogue source is going to get close to that. Indeed, if a replay chain is capable of repro'ing converter noise there is a reference monitoring level problem somewhere!

I also seem to remember that there was a "top end" converter that added a "sweetening" to the sound somewhat akin to, but not as blatant as Aphex? Was/is that manufacturer Apogee? I might be old fashioned but I believe in accurate recording, warts and all (then we do out best to expunge the warts!).

Once again I am NOT knocking Apogee or any other top AI maker but you don't need a Roller to go to Sainsburies. Nice, but you don't NEED it and the bacon will taste just the same carried in my old Proton.

Dave.

Frankly, given he actually owns a Yamaha mixer I'd still try the AI with two line inputs route.

My thoughts exactly. Whatever AI the OP gets it make sense to me to get one with an extra pair of line inputs thus vastly increasing the operational flexibility of the system.

Had he NOT already got a very acceptable mixer* there would be a case perhaps to K.I.S.S.

*Like Denon, I have never known Yamaha to make a bad ANYTHING!

Dave.
