What should I get in terms of monitors/headphones?

Currently, I'm using a Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin connected via a USB cable to my computer as a monitor. I also use a pair of Sennheiser HD 448 headphones for mixing. I have been considering selling the Zeppelin (used ones go for about $500-600 on Ebay) in order to buy a pair of Sennheiser HD 600s and a decent amp (Headroom BitHead or FiiO e8.) What would you guys think of this?
I like the Zeppelin, but it's really not suited to monitoring purposes (little to no stereo separation and an overemphasized bass frequency.) All the monitors I've tried in the price range haven't been much better, but I have used the headphones before, and they do offer very, very good quality and a totally flat response.
My final question is: Is it even possible to get a good mix using headphones? Would I be better off selling the Zeppelin and getting the cans, or should I just stick with what I have?

In my experience, the problem with headphones isn't the quality or the flat response. It's the stereo image.

I have sennheiser HD260s which I really like. I feel i can get a good mix on them in terms of frequency, but when i play the mix on any stereo speakers I realise the stereo image is way off.

If anything I'd keep the sennheisers and sell the zeppelin for some studio monitors or at least full range hifi speakers.

Yes. It is possible. But perhaps not a desirable way to go initially. Even budget 'monitors' are worth using and I always recommend them, even just to get started.
But you know, despite all that you hear, the only way you're ever going to know if you can get a decent mix on headphones is to try it. You may hit paydirt. Or you may chew on a cow's horn. Everyone is different.

Monitoring chain: The best you can possibly afford. Sacrifice and cut corners everywhere else if necessary - Not on the monitoring chain.

Headphones: The cheapest you can get away with. They aren't going to do you much good even if they're $2,000 stats.

I'm relatively new to recording, but know a considerable amount to get by. I worked on a song for several hours mixing through good quality studio headphones and the mix came out terrible. I was so frustrated that I went and bought KRK rokit 6s to add to the inventory. My personal opinion.. get some decent monitors and mix with those. It'll save the time and trouble.
