What should I do for drums?

Hey.
I have a fairly basic recording setup at the moment (guitar/bass/SM-57 > Line 6 UX-2 > Gearbox, running on a 2.2 GHz Macbook). I bought Logic Pro 8 which runs fairly well (I currently only have 1GB memory), and Abelton Live, I usually record on the former.

Only problem is I'm stuck on creating rhythm tracks, and at the moment am just using the loops bundled with Logic, but I'd prefer to be able to program my own. I know there you can program with Logic but I have yet to figure out how to do it exactly. Can someone give me a run-through or recommend me a reliable plug-in? I've seen great things done with EZ drummer, but am wondering if it justifies the price-tag if I have the capabilities of doing decent drum-tracks in Logic but just haven't figured out how to yet.

Thanks for any help.

If you're using an Apple, then why not use the whole musical typing feature that is included in GarageBand? The drums you make may not be the most realistic, but imo they're good enough for demos and such.

If you have no clue as to what I'm talking about, then Google something like "musical typing in garageband" and I'm sure you'll find something that will tell you all you need to know. But yeah, just a suggestion.

Ditto on Gband. You can transfer tracks back and forth from gband to logic pretty easily. Just create a project in the correct tempo and sequence some drums. Then load them in logic and record what you want over it.

The kits that come with Ultrabeat sound pretty good, and you can load them in as a channel strip and then either program them in pianoroll or record them with a midi interface. I've gotten pretty decent at playing drums on my keyboard, good enough that I sold my actual drums because the takes I was doing with MIDI drums sounded better (I'm actually using battery 3 over ultrabeat).

ultra beat seems to be really good from what i've seen from logic tutorials and video clips. read up on it.

The first thing I would do is recommend upgrading your RAM. At 1 GB, even in certain rigs, you're risking dropout even at the safe latency settings. Also, if you're recording more than 3 tracks at once, it's gonna be virtually impossible to get what you want done.

After that, if you're looking for electronic drums, I'm a HARDCORE Reason fan :-)
