what pre/mixer/??? do i need to complete my multi-track setup? (inst's>delta66>gb)

So currently i have:
  • a delta 66 non amped pci card with a break out box - 4 mono channels in (or 2 stereo channels)
  • bass, guitar, and roland digital td-3kw running in DIRECTLY, no amps. (volumes are ok, but instruments must be maxed out to get about 50% volume, mic is to low)
  • shs om-450 xlr > trs mic (must record through crappy mobo sound in until i get a preamp)
  • beefy quad core hackintosh with garageband (mac pro tools only supports firewire and usb on intel x86 systems. Windows pro tools doesn't pic up the levels enough to record well)
  • monitoring in stereo on my home theater system

So far this works ok. Decent levels. Samples included below. But the mic definitely needs pre'd to eliminate hiss. Also i figure if i preamp all the instruments, we wouldn't need to be at max volume and would have a lot bigger waveforms to work with.

What piece or multiple pieces of equipment do we need in order to preamp all my instruments on separate channels before they hit the delta 66?

Or better yet, is there any sort of replacement hardware that would combine the multi-track power of the delta breakout box with preamps on ever channel and outputs on every channel?

I'm also confused about line inputs on some devices, won't that keep the same low levels the instrument naturally has?

please be aware i'm pretty much a noob at this, i spaced out in my one pro tools class, but i learn fast. so speak simply at first ;)

what daw do you intend to use???

if protools,,it's not gona be cheap

if not.i'd recommend something like a presonus firepod / fp10

it will give you 8 preamps over firewire, and will work with hackintosh.

each channel will accept an xlr microphone, or a jack line in. preamps with line in are designed to accept and amplify the lower level.

no, i'm going to avoid pro tools because of the hardware dependency, just had it for class. I'll look into the prosonus.

for nearly 100k members this forum's kinda dead.

So the presonus looks pretty good, but i'm wondering if there's any way to not spend 300$ (say maybe in the 100-200 range max)

right, here's the plan....

get yourself onto google/ebay.....

if and 8 channel audio interface is what you're looking for,,,,,,search for 8 channel audio interface...

there are a few,,,,but be sure that they are interfaces,,,,not just preamps! (ie, look for a firewire connection for pc)

i can't imagine you'll get one for less than 250/300 though!

<edit, the forum's not really dead....my guess is, if you search this forum for audio interface, you'll find conversations about audio interfaces a hundred times over :) >
