I will soon be buying some monitors (probably the Alesis Monitor One MK2 Studio Monitors) because I heard they were great.
They are great but they are passive (just what I want) and I would like to know what kind of power amp should I use with these (please suggest brands and names) I was looking ak Crowns XRS (dunno if its really XRS the name :P) or the Alesis RA300.
please suggest more amps, give me more info etc (I am 15... lol)
I would also like to know if its better to have a preamp.

I also have a few old power/pre amps from the 80's I guess (they have a kind of dooden color cover lol) would that be good for powering monitors?
My father has a pre/power amp made by CARVER which he uses to power some B&W speakers... but he won't let me use that :P

thx a lot and sorry for the long message hehe (and for all spelling mistakes... I am french lol)

Always take in consideration in your suggestions that I am on a tight budget (I would say 300$ to 400$ really is the MAX MAX MAX I would go on the power amp)

see ya guys

I have the original Alesis M1 and I use the Alesis RA 100. It's a decent sounding setup. The Alesis RA 300 (at 150 watts a channel) will give those buggers more than enough juice to make monitoring smooth and detailed across the volume range.

Go for it.

Funny, I've never heard that said about ANY Alesis monitor....

I'm using a Hafler 1100 to power my YSM1i's. I picked it up from GC as a floor demo for $80.

Do these power amps you guys are using have volume knobs?

If not, what do you use as a volume knob?

I have a couple of Hafler Pro 1200s.
Another good bet is the old Crown DC series poweramps.

Who'd you hear that from? I think you'd be better off with a pair of the passive Yorkvilles and some flavour of Hafler amp. Sometimes you can find some pretty good used "audiophile" power amps for relatively cheap too.

mine doesn't. i use the my soundcard control panel and cubase master outputs.

Id definitely think about the Yorkville YSM-1's or Tannoy protoJ's......

ok really thx guys! I will be looking at the Yorkvills passive!
I live in Canada so why not support my own country's work!
