Hi all, a while back I sold my Mackie 1604VLZ mixer that I'd used for years with my Tascam 38 8 track. I needed the cash to buy a 24x8 board and an HD24.

Anyway, I'm up and running with the new system but find myself missing the simplicity (not to mention the sound) of the old 8-track reel-to-reel. So I'm thinking of getting another board and adding it back into my studio setup.

Ideally I would have bought a 32x8 board and just use the last 8 for the Tascam, but since I didn't, I'm thinking about a small board instead.

I've ruled out the Mackie now that I have some experience with different/better boards, eqs and pres. What I'd like is:

*8 to 12 channels with direct outs and some sort of tape returns (no repatching)
*At least 4 buss
*2 to 4 Aux Sends
*(optional) a Mix B setup for monitoring durring playback, I could use the busses for this

I've thought about the MixWiz 14:4:2, but would love to hear what else people think is worth a look.

Thanks
N

I've heard some really good things about the soundcraft m series mixers. I think that it should cover all of your requirements as well...and it supposedly has the same pre's on it as the GHOST...mmmm. So take a look at the M8 or the M12...they're actually fairly inexpensive for the quality that they are said to provide. And they look pretty killer as well. :)

They are good, but they don't have any separate mix busses--just the auxillary sends. If you want something with separate busses you're probably into a Mackie or Allen & Heath.

Thanks all! I'll keep an eye out for the models you all mentioned.

ARP, any thoughts on where I can find decent older Tascam mixers?

I just gave Nate a rep point for asking his question in such a straightforward, intelligent, engineering friendly way. There are far to many people who post something like "what is the best board for recording, for about X$."

Way to go Nate!

Nate, I am not the man for this size of mixer. I have however played with the Allen & Heath board in question and I was real impressed by the EQ on those boards. It's solid.

So,... what is the best mixer for recording Hip-Hop/Heavy Metal?

................... :eek:

Seems to me like the only board mentioned so far that has tape returns is the Soundcraft Ghost, or the older Tascam. If you are looking at used consoles, there are some killer small footprint Sony mxp's, Studers, and TAC bullets out there. That kind of stuff will blow the sox off any of the newer stuff. If you are buying new, the M series Soundcraft's are fairly decent and pretty cheap. The Allen Heath is a little more expensive, but is larger and offers more features. The Soundcraft Ghost has all the features and a decent sound. The Midas Venice is lacking in the extra feature department but is by far the best sounding of the Sub10k consoles. It's the only one that would actually make me think twice about buying a vintage desk instead.

The Tascam M520 has:

-> 20 inputs: 20 XLR's + phantom pwr, 2 1/4" HiZ line inputs on first 2 channels

-> 8 pgm busses

-> 4 aux's (2-stereo pairs)

-> 16 tape returns

-> 3-band sweepable EQ/each channel

-> 28 Access-Snd>Rcv patch points (on each of 20-channels & 8-busses)

-> -10 to +4 line amp/onboard

-> 12 VU meters

Um... thanks! I'm flattered. I must confess, I've always wondered what what a Rep number was and how you get them. Now I have one of my very own :)

That being said: does anybody remember which board Tascam original "intended" for use with the Tascam 38?
